Game #18 New York Liberty vs San Antonio Silver Stars Game Recap (Mini Notes Version)

This recap is about 4 days late. I got busy and it’s hard to update your post with the All Star Game going on. The West won the All Star Game and Danielle Robinson participated in the win. Getting back to this game, the Silver Stars had an early camp day start and the Liberty were in town. The Silver Stars had won their previous match up against the Liberty and for the first time this season they swept the series against another team. The Stars improved to 6-12 while the Liberty dropped to 7-11.

  • This game was ugly. There was no denying it. It was un watchable at certain times.
  • Both teams shot less than 40% for the game.  The Silver Stars were just able to gut it out and get a much needed win
  • Jayne Appel had another strong rebounding game with 13 rebounds. If only Jayne looked to score more, she would have a good chance of being the most improved player.
  • The Silver Stars were able to hold all of the Liberty weapons to less than stellar shooting nights and defended them well
  • The Danielle Adams – Jayne Appel inside and outside combo is interesting. I want to see more than 2 games, but I think the Stars could benefit from this starting combo going forward. You get an inside post presence with Jayne and an outside shooting presence with Danielle making it difficult for teams to leave both.
  • Bill Laimbeer was ejected from this game after what looked like a questionable call for the Liberty. It was that kind of afternoon game.
  • Danielle Robinson had a great All Star performance with 17 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds
  • Jia Perkins struggled but she had other great stats such as 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals
  • Silver Stars are on a two game winning streak! Let the celebration begin.
  • Dan Hughes wins his 200th game. Way to go Dan! Dan is one of the best coaches in this league who has been able to have an impact in his players.
  • The Silver Stars biggest attendance as 12,000+ were at the game.
  • The Silver Stars now only have two matchups against the East – one on the road against Indiana and one at home against Atlanta
  • The Silver Stars don’t play again until August 2nd when they face the red hot Minnesota Lynx

Game #18 New York Liberty vs San Antonio Silver Stars Game Preview

The Silver Stars are in action on kids camp day as they take on the New York Liberty. This is also the last game before they go on the All Star break. Danielle Robinson is headed for the All Star Game as is New York guard Cappie Pondexter.  Both teams are under .500 and both are coming in off wins. The Liberty stole a road win in Indiana on Tuesday while the Silver Stars were able to grab a home win against the Connecticut Sun last Saturday. This game could help both teams as New York is currently in a playoff race with Indiana for the fourth seed and San Antonio is trying to avoid being at the bottom of the Western Conference. This is also the second of a two game series between the two teams. San Antonio was able to escape with a road win in the first game with a 78-77 road win. The Silver Stars are currently 3-5 at home.

Projected Starting Lineup for the New York Liberty

G – Cappie Pondexter

G – Katie Smith

F – Plennette Pierson

F – Toni Young

C – Kara Braxton

Projected Starting Lineup for the San Antonio Silver Stars

G – Danielle Robinson

G – Jia Perkins

F – Shenise Johnson

F/C – Danielle Adams

C – Jayne Appel

1. Defend Cappie Pondexter. Cappie was big in New York’s  latest win and in order for the Silver Stars to end on a winning note, they will need Danielle Robinson, Jia Perkins, Shenise Johnson to defend her as best as possible. They will need to keep her out of the lane, and keep her from scoring at will. They will need to make it tough for her to score.

2. Post Presence – Despite not being an All Star, Plennette Pierson is still a tough post player. Danielle Adams and Jayne Appel will also have to keep her from the paint and force her to shoot where she isn’t comfortable. Kelsey Bone is also a promising young rookie post so the Silver Stars will need to keep her from making an impact on the game.

3. The Danielle Factor – Both Danielle Robinson and Danielle Adams will have to step up and be the leaders if the Silver Stars want to win the game. Danielle Robinson will need to be aggressive, push the tempo and look for her own scoring. Danielle Adams will need to continue scoring but she will have to do more of it in the paint area like she was able to do last game.

The Silver Stars game will be on LiveAccess and will be at 11:30 am local time. It is an early tip, so expect screaming kids and drink lots of coffee!

Recapping the Friday and Saturday Home and Home Series vs Minnesota & Connecticut(Games 16 and 17)

Two games, two different opponents. It’s amazing how one night, everyone looks lethargic and slow and the next night, suddenly everyone looks energized and play better. That’s exactly what happens when you play the best team in the Western Conference the Minnesota Lynx and the worst team in the Eastern Conference the Connecticut Sun the next night. The Silver Stars split the home and home series 1-1 and are now 3-5 at home this season.

Click here for the official recap for the blow out loss to the Lynx on Friday..

I was out for the game that happened on Friday, so I can only go by play by play and the box score. Below are some brief game notes.

  • The injuries keep piling up. This time, it took Delisha Milton Jones who left the game with a knee injury. Her status is questionable and most likely day to day.
  • I wrote in my game preview for this game that the Silver Stars would need to contain the Lynx starting 5. They didn’t as Lindsay Whalen, Maya Moore, Janel McCarville had 21, 14 and 10 points apiece. Lindsay Whalen had herself a game and was incredibly efficient w 21 points in 26 minutes
  • I also wrote in my game preview that the Stars had to prevent an X factor from scoring. They didn’t as Deveraux Peters had 13 points. It’s difficult to win games especially against the Lynx when they have another player scoring other than their starting 5.
  • Nothing really positive to say about the Stars performance stat wise except they out rebounded the Lynx by 1 37 to 36
  • Lindsay Whalen is an All Star. There is no doubt about that.

After the Stars suffered a blow out loss to the Lynx they had to regroup and get ready for the Connecticut Sun.  First, read the official recap  for the game and then read my game recap below.

San Antonio – July 20, 2013

Aneela Khan

The San Antonio Silver Stars were thrilled and more than happy to end their season high 4 game losing streak to the Connecticut Sun on Saturday night. After a rough season in which San Antonio has lost their two best players and another starter on Friday they could finally smile after their victory. The Silver Stars were led by Danielle Adams who was starting in her second straight game and scored 20 points and 8 rebounds. Jayne Appel also was big for San Antonio as she had a career high 18 rebounds. After a first half in which both teams were tied at 35, San Antonio took the lead after the third quarter and never looked back. Connecticut struggled to score in the second half and only scored 17 points, 4 of them in the third quarter. Jia Perkins was instrumental in the second half with 9 second half points, 7 of them in the third quarter run that put the game away. Tina Charles had 18 points and 12 rebounds and outside of Charles, the Sun struggled. Tina also passed 2000 points in her career at the 6:20 minute mark in the third quarter. Renee Montgomery who was playing in her second straight game from her return of her injury struggled shooting as did Tan White. The Silver Stars next game is before the All Star Break on July 25th against the New York Liberty. It is also camp day.

  • Jia Perkins, Danielle Adams and Jayne Appel all came to play. All three were huge in their roles and helped keep the Sun from even thinking about making it a game. Danielle Robinson was also key.
  • Kara Lawson did not play. My guess it was to rest either her knee or back.
  • Tina Charles didn’t shoot the ball enough. She did have 20 attempts which is the most on her team but on a night where the other players were struggling, it would’ve been better to give her the ball more and let her work. The Sun completely forgot about Tina in the third quarter and the 4th quarter in which she only scored 2 points. Jayne Appel did a fine job defending Tina and made her work a little more for her shots.
  • On that note on Tina. Scoring 2000 points in 3 and a half seasons is remarkable. She’s on the Angel McCoughtry, Cappie Pondexter, Diana Taurasi scoring pace. Which is to say she’s going to score a lot of points at a rapid pace. Scary, just scary.
  • Free throws just weren’t going to happen in this game. Only 7 for the Stars, 11 for the Sun.
  • The crowd was into the game despite the team struggles and the opponent struggles. Nice to see San Antonio still appreciating their WNBA team

Game #17 Connecticut Sun vs San Antonio Silver Stars Game Day Preview

The San Antonio Silver Stars are in action again tonight as they face the visiting Connecticut Sun. The Sun are 4-10 this season, and lost against Tulsa on Friday. The Silver Stars are 4-12 and lost their season high 4th straight game to the Minnesota Lynx on Friday. They also lost Delisha Milton Jones to an leg injury. This game will feature two bad struggling teams near or at the bottom of their conferences and should be a barn burner. This is also the 2nd game of a two game series between the two teams. The Connecticut Sun won the previous game by a final score of 86-84. Tina Charles had 20 points and 10 rebounds and the Sun were able to escape because the Silver Stars last play couldn’t take them to overtime. Both teams will be extremely happy to get a win tonight and avoid being worse than the other. If San Antonio loses tonight, they will drop to 4-13 and essentially tie with the Shock to drop to the bottom of the conference and then shall the lottery  talk will start to surface.

Projected Starting Lineups for the San Antonio Silver Stars

PG – Danielle Robinson

SG – Jia Perkins

F – Danielle Adams

F – Shenise Johnnson

C – Jayne Appel

Starting Lineups for the Connecticut Sun

G – Allison Hightower

G – Iziane Castro Marques

F – Kalana Greene

F – Kelsey Griffin

C – Tina Charles

1. Defend Allison Hightower, Tina Charles and Kara Lawson – The Sun rely on these three key players to play well and when they do the entire team feeds off them which leds them to winning games. When they don’t play well their team struggles and the opponent usually wins the game. If the Stars manage to keep 2 out of 3 players struggling, they can win the game.

2. SCORE. Danielle Robinson needs to score more than 4 points. Danielle Adams needs to score more than 13 points. Jia Perkins needs to score 20 points. Shameka Christon needs to score 15 points. It’s pretty clear how badly the Silver Stars need to score in order to win games and for the rest of the season.

3. Keep it close. The Stars couldn’t keep it close vs Minnesota and vs Washington. So the Stars need to come out strong, be aggressive and let that dictate how they play the rest of the game.

The Silver Stars game will be on LiveAccess. The Stars are 2-5 at home and will be at the AT&T Center. Tip off is at 7 pm local time, 8 pm EST and 5 pm PST.

Game #16 Minnesota Lynx vs San Antonio Silver Stars Game Day Preview

The San Antonio Silver Stars are back at it for the first of 2 games at the AT&T Center for a back to back home stand. The Silver Stars face the visiting Minnesota Lynx who’ve had 5 days of rest prior to this game. The Lynx have won 4 in a row thanks largely in part to the play of their point guard Lindsay Whalen and Monica Wright. The Silver Stars have lost 3 in a row and will need to play their best game if they want a shot to beat the Lynx. The Lynx are 4-3 on the road this season while the Stars are 2-4 at home. This is the second of 4 meetings between the two teams. The Silver Stars lost the first game by a final score of 87 to 72, but it was a close game throughout until midway the fourth quarter where the Silver Stars didn’t have enough to close it out and the Lynx won.

Projected Starting Lineups for the Minnesota Lynx

PG – Lindsay Whalen

SG – Monica Wright

SF – Maya Moore

PF – Rebekkah Brunson

C – Janel McCarville

Starting Lineups for the San Antonio Silver Stars

PG – Danielle Robinson

SG – Jia Perkins

SF – Shenise Johnson

PF – Delisha Milton Jones

C – Jayne Appel

1. Defence. Defend the Minnesota Lynx starting 5. If the Silver Stars can slow down Lindsay Whalen, Maya Moore, Monica Wright & Rebekkah Brunson, then the Stars are giving themselves  a good oppurtunity to steal the game. It might be too much to ask to slow down all 4, but if they can just make them work for their points and transition buckets, the Stars will come out as the winners of the game.

2. Balanced scoring attack. This HAS to happen for the Silver Stars to win games. The Stars struggle when they cannot get more than 2 people to score. In a season where they are tied for third with fewest wins in the league and are 2 losses behind Tulsa, it’s pretty clear that the playoffs are starting to fade from the Stars season. They need to score if they want to stay in the game. It’s that simple.

3. No X Factor. Don’t let Janel McCarville have a big game. Same goes for Deveraux Peters. The Silver Stars should limit the bench players and or role players from having a big game because the Lynx will have spread their offence around making it difficult for the Silver Stars to defend.

The game will be on Fox Sports Southwest and on Fox Sports Northwest. It will be at 7 pm local time, 8 pm EST and 5 pm PST. It will also be on LiveAccess.

Game #15 San Antonio Silver Stars vs Washington Mystics Game Day Preview

The Silver Stars have been busy lately, as the schedule has made them play so far a game every other day. After tonight, they will get a small break before playing back to back nights in SA on Friday and Saturday. The Silver Stars are in Washington tonight, playing the Mystics. The Stars and the Mystics last met up just four days ago in SA. The Mystics were able to win the game thanks in part to good FT shooting and outstanding play of their bench. This will be the Silver Stars ninth road game which ties them with Tulsa currently for most played so far this season. The Stars are 2-6 on the road this season.

Projected Starting Lineups for the Silver Stars

PG – Danielle Robinson

SG – Jia Perkins

SF – Shenise Johnson

PF – Delisha Milton Jones

C – Jayne Appel

Projected Starting Lineups for the Washington Mystics

PG – Ivory Latta

SG – Matee Ajavon

SF – Monique Currie

PF – Crystal Langhorne

C – Michelle Snow

1. Defend the paint. It’s no secret that the Mystics were able to get to the FT line 33 times. The reason they were able to do it is because they were being aggressive in getting to the basket. Even their bench players were productive just solely based on getting to the rim. The Mystics out rebounded the Stars 44 to 25 making the Silver Stars job even more difficult of winning the game. The Silver Stars will need every one to step up defensively to stop the Mystics from getting to the paint.

2. Balanced scoring attack. This will be one of my three keys to the game, in every game forward. The Silver Stars aren’t going to win many games if only one or two people are in double digits scoring wise. They just aren’t talented enough to pull it off. The Stars will need their starters, plus two options off the bench to play well in order for the Stars to win games.

3. Make their bench a non factor. The Mystics bench was simply superb in the last game. Tierra Ruffin Pratt played well, as did the other Mystic rookies Nadira McKenith and Emma Messeman. The Silver Stars must keep the bench from making an impact otherwise they will lose their third straight game and twice to the Mystics.

The Silver Stars tip off is at 7 pm local time. You can watch the game on LiveAccess & if you live in the DC area, you can watch on the Monumental Sports live broadcast shown on the Mystics home page.
