Game #27 Seattle Storm vs San Antonio Silver Stars Game Day Preview

The Silver Stars have had a busy August and it continues this afternoon when they host the Seattle Storm in a home and home stand. The Silver Stars have lost 2 games on the road and will aim to play better in front of their home crowd. The Seattle Storm have played much better recently and are on a roll. They’ve won 3 in a row and are now 13-13 in which they were below .500 for much of the season. The Storm are also 6-7 on the road this season. The Stars are 1-2 against the Storm this season. The playoffs seem distant for the Stars but that doesn’t mean that the Silver Stars should give up. They have a shot of being playoff spoilers to other teams and trying to end the season on a strong note.

Probable Starting Lineups for the Seattle Storm

PG – Temeka Johnson

SG – Tanisha Wright

F/G – Shekinna Stricklen

PF – Camille Little

F- Tina Thompson

Probable Starting Lineups for the San Antonio Silver Stars

PG – Davellyn Whyte or Danielle Robinson if she plays

SG – Jia Perkins

SF – Shenise Johnson

F/C – Danielle Adams

C – Jayne Appel

1. Defend Tina Thompson – Tina Thompson is having one of her best seasons in a while as the Storm’s first option. Despite her age, she’s having an MVP season and she should be one of the MVP candidates alongside her coach Brian Agler for Coach of the Year Award. Tina’s play has been vital for the Storm so the Silver Stars have to make sure that they double team and make sure that they cover her so that she won’t be as effective. Danielle Adams will have her hands full as well so she will require help from the other Star players.

2. No X Factor – Every time the Storm plays against the Stars, someone steps up other than their starters. The Stars will have to make it difficult for other players to step up. It’s as simple as that.

3. 4 FULL quarters – I had this as one of my keys last game and it hurt them as they couldn’t play 4 full quarters which cost them the game against Tulsa. I will continue having this as one of my keys to the game until the Stars deliver a full 40 minute performance.

The game will be on LiveAccess and will tip off at 3:30 pm local time, 4:30 pm EST and 1:30 pm PST.

Game #26 San Antonio Silver Stars vs Tulsa Shock Game Recap

The playoffs are fading away for the  Silver Stars this season as they lost to the Tulsa Shock by a final score of 73-67.  The Stars are now 9-17 this season and 3-11 on the road. It looks more and more likely that Seattle will be the last team to qualify for the 2013 Western Conference playoffs. My game recap of the game is below along with notes from the game.

August 23, 2013

The Silver Stars knew heading into Tulsa that getting into the playoffs over Seattle was going to be tough. And now with a loss against Tulsa, it became even more difficult. The Silver Stars streak of going to the playoffs since 2007 will most likely end in 2013. The Silver Stars were playing the game without their All Star and WNBA assists leader Danielle Robinson as she was a game time decision. However, she did travel to Tulsa. The Stars struggled in the first half as they couldn’t score and Tulsa took full advantage of it and led 18-8 after the first quarter. The second quarter featured much of the same with the Stars struggling to score for minutes at a time and the Shock stretched their lead 40-22 at half time. It was the Silver Stars second straight bad 1st half of play. The third and fourth quarter finally saw the Silver Stars play defense, and made Elizabeth Cambage work for her points. The Stars managed to get the lead down to single digits many times, but didn’t have enough time to pull out the come back win and the Shock survived to win 73-67. Elizabeth Cambage and Glory Johnson both combined for 35 points and 12 rebounds for Tulsa while Shameka Christon had a season high 18 points and Shenise Johnson had 13 points and 8 rebounds to lead San Antonio. The Silver Stars and the Shock play a week from now and the series is tied at 1 game apiece. The Silver Stars play a home and home series next against Seattle which starts on Sunday.

  • There were two games in that game. The first half featured the Shock’s ability to play well dictated through their talented center in Liz Cambage and All Star Glory Johnson. In the first half, the Stars lack of depth showed as well as inability to score in quarters this season whether Danielle Robinson plays or not.
  • In the second half, the game featured SASS ability to play through adverse situations and how they’ve responded to them this season. It featured SASS defense on Liz Cambage, SASS’s players playing gritty and how they usually play at home. It also featured Tulsa’s inability to close out games and their youth definitely was in focus. If SASS had more time, they would’ve pulled out the comeback win.
  • Nice to see the young players from SA play with more time. I’ve seen glimpses of good post play from Kayla Alexander, some good moments from Davellyn White and a little bit of promise from Chelsea Poppens. I’ve seen Shenise Johnson (despite her ups and downs) become a better player than she was when she was a rookie last year.
  • Glad the game was on FSSW and not the regular Tulsa feed. I’ve heard interesting things from people who’ve watched the Tulsa feed this season. Also, it’s remarkable how different TV games are then those without TV. Wow. I wish all 34 games were on TV for every team in the league.
  • Despite out rebounding 36-23, they still lost. Rebounding is still only a part of the story. In the end, all it matters is the final score.
  • I really hope Danielle Robinson can play next game. She’s having one heck of a stellar season despite the team’s record and I hope she finishes the season on a strong note.

Game #26 San Antonio Silver Stars vs Tulsa Shock Game Day Preview

The Silver Stars are on the road again as they face the last place Tulsa Shock. The Stars and the Shock, despite their records still have a shot of getting into the playoffs albeit a long one. The Stars will try to go for just their fourth road win of the season while the Shock will try to win just their sixth home game of the season. The Stars are currently leading the series 1-0 with 3 games left to play in the series, including this one. After tonight, the Silver Stars only have 3 road games left to play. The Stars are 3-10 on the road. Other good news is that Danielle Robinson who is with the team in Tulsa will most likely play which is great news because she was sorely missed in the second half against Indiana last game.

Probable Starting Lineups for the Silver Stars

PG – Danielle Robinson (game time decision)

SG – Jia Perkins

SF – Shenise Johnson

F/C – Danielle Adams

C – Jayne Appel

Probable Starting Lineups for the Tulsa Shock

PG – Angel Goodrich

SG – Candice Wiggins

SF – Nicole Powell

PF – Glory Johnson

C – Liz Cambage

1. Defend the duo – Liz Cambage and Glory Johnson are Tulsa’s two best players and the two together are both terrific front court players. The Silver Stars will need to help Danielle Adams and Jayne Appel in double and tripling both players to make sure that both are not as effective in the game tonight.

2. No X Factor –  Riquna Williams has only played 19 games this season but every time she comes off the bench, she is a capable 20 point scorer.  Roneeka Hodges, can also go off as well as Nicole Powell.  If the Stars can manage to hold off an X factor then they can win an important road game.

3. 4 FULL QUARTERS – The Silver Stars need to play four full quarters and be able to be effective both offensively and defensively to offset the Shock’s chances of winning this game. The Shock will be hungry so the Stars must come prepared otherwise it will be another loss on the road.

The game will be at 7 pm local time, 8 pm EST and 5 pm PST in Tulsa at the BOK Center. The game will be available on Live Access

Game #25 San Antonio Silver Stars vs Indiana Fever Game Day Recap

The San Antonio Silver Stars fell to the Indiana Fever by a final score of 80-63. Danielle Adams led the way for SA with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Shavonte Zellous had 20 points for Indiana. The Silver Stars drop to 9-16 on the season and 3-10 on the road. The Silver Stars next opponent is Tulsa on Friday and the good news is that the Stars only have 4 more road games to play this season, including the one on Friday at Tulsa. My game recap is below, along with game observations and notes.

August 21, 2013

The San Antonio Silver Stars were looking to fix their road problems when they came to Indiana as they were 3-9 on the road this season. However, their road troubles continued as Indiana was able to pull out the victory and improve to .500 at home. The Silver Stars are now 3-10 on the road this season. That wasn’t the last of the Silver Star problems. Already short with their best two players, Danielle Robinson didn’t play in the second half as she injured her right knee during the last minutes of the 1st half. Danielle Robinson was leading the WNBA in assists per game with 6.9 and her status is not yet known. The Fever controlled this game thanks largely in part to San Antonio’s 19 turnovers compared to Indiana’s 12. They also managed to keep players in foul trouble making things even more difficult for San Antonio. Indiana led the first quarter by six 19-13 and built on a 22-12 run in the second quarter due to Tamika Catchings scoring 15 points. They built a 41-25 lead at half time. In the third quarter, San Antonio made it interesting when Davellyn White made two threes which cut Indiana’s lead to 44-37. However, IND was able to re take the lead thanks to Shavonte Zellous who was stellar in the second half. She had 20 points in her first game back from a foot injury. San Antonio never recovered and Indiana ran away with the game by a final score of 80-63.

  •  I sure hope Danielle Robinson is ok. The Silver Stars are not just the same without her leadership and her ability to run the team.
  • Chelsea Poppens played in her second game for San Antonio. She had 3 points, and was active offensively. She struggles defensively which is to be expected and I thought she was decent. She still has a long way to go before she becomes a good player.
  • Indiana’s Fever LiveAccess was sharp and the Fever had a decent attendance for a Wednesday evening with 7,416 people. It looked sparse, but full at the same time
  • This was an ugly game for SA. Not worth watching again for San Antonio fans.

Game #25 San Antonio Silver Stars vs Indiana Fever Game Day Preview

The Silver Stars are on the road as they visit the defending champion the Indiana Fever for the second and final time this season. The Silver Stars are coming off a win against the Mercury while the Fever are coming off from a loss at Seattle. The Silver Stars only have 10 games left to play in the regular season and this is the last time they will face an Eastern Conference opponent until Sept 15 which is the end of the regular season against Atlanta at home. The Western Conference playoff race is tightening up and it looks more and more like Seattle will be the final Western Conference team to qualify. However, it is still early and the Silver Stars still control their destiny as they play Seattle two more times and Tulsa 3 more times this season. The Silver Stars are 3-9 on the road while the Fever are 6-7 at home. The Fever currently lead the series 1-0.

Probable Starting Lineup for the Silver Stars

PG – Danielle Robinson

SG – Jia Perkins

SF – Shenise Johnson

F/C – Danielle Adams

C – Jayne Appel

Probable Starting Lineup for the Indiana Fever

PG – Briann January

G- Shavonte Zellous or Erin Phillips

SF – Tamika Catchings

G/F – Karima Christmas

C – Erlana Larkins

1. Defend – The Indiana Fever are known for their defense and the Fever will be itching to play well after three straight road losses. Catchings is a well known defender as is Briann January and Erin Phillips. The Silver Stars must be ready for it and both Danielles will need to be on top of their game for the Stars to steal a road game.

2. Balanced scoring attack – Like last game, the Silver Stars need 4 double figure scorers and they need the bench to play well. The more balanced the Stars are the harder it will be for the Fever to stop them.

3. Get to the FT line – The Fever will make life difficult on the perimeter so the Stars must drive and attack. The Fever are limited in the paint due to injuries so the Stars have an advantage there. They shouldn’t settle for jumpers and look to drive more than they usually do.

The game will be on LiveAccess at 6 pm local time, 7 pm EST and 4 pm PST.

Game #24 Phoenix Mercury vs San Antonio Silver Stars Game Day Recap

Oops. I completely forgot to do the game recap for this game on Sunday and got way too busy on Monday to do it. But, without any further delay, below is my version of the game that was played on Saturday and my usual notes & observations from the game are below that.

San Antonio

The San Antonio Silver Stars had lost a previously winnable game against the Seattle Storm slip away last weekend and didn’t want a repeat against the Phoenix Mercury. The Silver Stars put on their best offensive performance of the season with 88 points and 42% from the field and three point land and 90% from the FT line. Danielle Adams who joined the 1000 point club was the leading scorer along with Danielle Robinson who also had 8 assists. Jia Perkins had 18 points and Shenise Johnson added 15. The Silver Stars struggled in the opening minutes of the game but were able to quickly adjust and led at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Silver Stars were able to be effective offensively and were beginning to run away with the game when the Phoenix Mercury began to strike back and made it a game with San Antonio on top 45-37 at halftime. The third quarter featured runs from both teams and at one point the Mercury were within striking distance at 5 but could never close the game and San Antonio was able to take advantage going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Silver Stars managed to keep the Mercury from stealing the game and won the game by a final score of 88-82. 10,096 people were at the AT&T Center to catch a glimpse of the historical pink court and some came for the Mercury’s Brittney Griner who was playing in her last Texas appearance this season. The Silver Stars are now .500 at home and are 2-1 in the 5 game series against Phoenix. The Silver Stars play the final two games of the series in Phoenix later this season. The Silver Stars next oppenent is Indiana who they face Wednesday on the road.

Notes + Observations

  • Congrats to Cathrine Kraayeveld and Danielle Adams on reaching 1000 points and 1000 rebounds respectively! It’s an amazing accomplishment to show for what they have achieved in this league so far.
  • The Silver Stars managed to neutralize Brittney Griner by double teaming her and keeping her out of her comfort zone. I felt that Jayne Appel did a reasonable job of defending her as Griner was only limited to 6 points.
  • The best offensive performance of the season by the Silver Stars. They shot really well from the three point land and from the field. It was just nice to see them shooting well after many games of sub par shooting and struggling to score in other games.
  • When the Silver Stars have some time off to prepare for their next opponent, they do well. When they don’t scout and prepare for their next opponent, they struggle. Time really is the essence for the Silver Stars. They play like a competitive playoff team when rested as compared to a struggling, non competitive team on either a day or no days rest.
  • Shenise Johnson is officially the Silver Stars important player. When she plays well, the team wins. When she struggles, the team often struggles to find its balance.  It used to be Jayne Appel, but now that she’s improving every day not only defensively, but offensively as well, she’s found her footing and can be counted or relied upon to play well in every single game, rather than one game here or two games from now, etc.
  • The pink court looks weird from TV and liveaccess point of view. It probably looked nice in person but it didn’t look that aesthetically pleasing on my computer screen.
  • Chelsea Poppens played in this game. I have no thoughts on her yet because it’s just too early and considering this is my first time watching her play, she didn’t play enough to make an impression as to what kind of player she will be.
  • There’s just only 11 games left this season. The Stars are 2 games behind the fourth place Seattle Storm and will play them this week. They will need both victories against the Storm other wise Seattle will make the playoffs.

Game #24 Phoenix Mercury vs San Antonio Silver Stars Game Day Preview

The Silver Stars are FINALLY back in action after 5 days. The Silver Stars are facing the Phoenix Mercury on a historic pink court for Breast Cancer Awareness week throughout the league. The Silver Stars are looking to get back on track after splitting the two game road stand with Seattle. The Silver Stars are 5-6 at home this season and need every game from now on out to get into the playoffs. The Silver Stars are 1-1 against the Mercury this season. They will play 2 more times after today.

Probable Starting Lineups for the Phoenix Mercury

G – Diana Taurasi

G – Brianna Gilbreath

F – Dewanna Bonner

F – Candice Dupree  or Charde Houston

C – Brittney Griner

Probable Starting Lineups for the Silver Stars

PG – Danielle Robinson

SG – Jia Perkins

F – Shenise Johnson

F/C – Danielle Adams

C – Jayne Appel

1. Make Brittney Griner work – Last time when the Stars and the Mercury met up, Brittney Griner was able to be effective and score easily in the post against the Star defenders. The Silver Stars will need to make Brittney Griner play out of her comfort zone and defend her well enough to ensure she doesn’t have another big night against the Stars.

2. Everyone scores – All of the Silver Stars will need to score and they need to be effective. They will need all of the scoring because it will make it difficult for the Mercury to stop the players when alot of players are playing well.

3. PLAY FOUR FULL QUARTERS – The Silver Stars need to play well in every quarter and every minute. The Silver Stars need to make sure that they don’t have a bad quarter because it will give the Mercury momentum to start rolling towards a road victory.

*Danielle Adams needs 3 points to reach 1000 points. She will be the 159th player in league history to do so.

*Cathrine Kraayeveld needs 3 rebounds to reach 1000 rebounds. She will be the 70th player in league history to do so.

The game will be on LiveAccess. The game will be at 8 pm EST, 7 pm local time and 5 pm PST.
