Group A:
The group stage concluded on Wednesday, starting in this group with New Zealand looking to take care of their business. They handled what they could with Tahila Tupaea returning and leading them to a 76-45 win over Lebanon, which quickly knew that they were headed to the game that would determine which team would continue at this level in 2 years. South Korea needed a win to jump to second place while China would have needed to lose by a large margin to not seal up the top spot and a spot in Olympic qualifiers, but they did not ease up, leaning heavily on Han Xu and Li Meng and forcing the game into overtime after Park Ji-Su and South Korea had the better start before running out of steam and losing 87-81.

Group B:
The game for who would reach the playoffs and who would be the other team in the relegation game was played first. The Philippines knew that they had no expectations and they played fearlessly in taking a lead and then Vanessa De Jesus helped them hold off Lin Yu-Ting and Taiwan for a 92-81 win and an improbable spot in the next round. No calculations were needed for the final game of the group stage with the winner taking the other automatic spot in the semifinals and the accompanying berth in Olympic qualifying. Australia was hoping the story would be different on home soil early, but Monica Okoye and Japan ended up winning 91-66.
