Asia Cup Playoffs June 30th

7th Place Game:

The first game of the day on Friday was for the right to remain in this division for the next tournament in 2 years. With the results so far, there was some definite unpredictability in how this would go after Taiwan’s last loss. They were led by Chen Wei-An, but Rebecca Akl and Lebanon took the lead and then did enough late to secure a 75-73 win and their status at this level. Taiwan, which had been coasting for multiple tournaments will face a tough road back without reform in their program.

Playoffs:

The two knockout round games would both determine the semifinalists and the last two spots from the region in the Olympic qualifying tournaments. New Zealand knew that this would be their best chance since this format was adopted, but had to feel nervous about failing at that last hurdle again when the Philippines tied the game in the fourth quarter. The combination of Charlisse Leger-Walker and Tera Reed did enough for them to win 83-78 and finally move on to the global stage. Hosts Australia shut the door on an upset quickly, rolling to a 91-64 win over South Korea. They will face China next while New Zealand faces Japan and the Phillipines and South Korea will play for 5th place.
