Overseas League Updates September 30th

Hungarian League Round 1

The league has two fewer teams this season, but started play with a full slate on Saturday. Chloe Marotta’s excellent professional debut alongside Santa Baltkojiene helped Szigetszentmiklos provide a scare, but they fell just short in Szekszard 79-77. Gyor looked strong in an 88-49 win over Vasas, which got a professional debut from Myah Taylor. Petra Farkas returned to her home country to make her professional debut for Cegled, but they struggled to an 82-43 loss against PEAC. DVTK had the advantage of playing two important games already and won at BEAC 78-51. There was a lot of concern about what kind of roster Sopron could put out after their announcement that they did not have funding to participate in EuroLeague after a decade of dominance locally and they did keep Yvonne Turner and looked solid early, but MTK had Monika Czinano and Sha Carter making professional debuts and Fanni Szabo had an excellent game to help them rally dramatically late to force overtime and win 86-80.

Polish Super Cup

The season started on Saturday with a rematch of the championship series from the last campaign. Polkowice had the advantage of already playing two big games and Zala Friskovec and Brianna Fraser helped them hit the ground running here. Lublin wanted to prove that last season was not a fluke and that their new roster will contend again and their late really got them an 81-77 win.
