Overseas League Updates October 1st

Turkish League Round 4 September 29th-October 1st

The round started on Friday with Bursa’s trio of Trinity Baptiste, Kiana Williams, and Madi Williams all firing, but still falling short against Orman 87-84. On Saturday, Hatay was shorthanded again, this time having only Alexis Tolefree and G’mrice Davis while Galatasaray was able to fill up all the foreign spots in their lineup for the first time, getting an excellent game from Mikiah Herbert Harrigan and Julie Vanloo’s best effort since they signed her late, winning 91-74. The other game also featured foreign player additions to the full quota as Danielle Robinson joined Khadijiah Cave in leading Tarsus past Brooke McCarty-Williams and Cankaya University. Sunday started with Cukurova’s 69-52 win over Botas. Besiktas was thrilled to have Dana Evans back in time for her to lead them past Gintare Petronyte and Kayseri 82-76. Alanna Smith also made an immediate impact alongside Sehernaz Cidal in a 94-76 win over Destanni Henderson and Antalya. Fenerbahce got an expectedly tough test from Khaalia Hillsman and Izmit, but did enough in the second half to win 75-70.

Spanish Super Cup September 30th-October 1st

Gran Canaria hosted the competition this weekend as it was played after the league had already started. Zaragoza was looking to send a message in Saturday’s first game against the champions, but lost to Raquel Carrera and Valencia 74-57. There was some worry about how well the hosts would be able to compete against the top teams in the league, but Jade Loville had a great performance and it ended up being a fantastic game before Avenida prevailed 90-87. Sunday’s final had Valencia taking a big lead early before holding off Avenida late 78-73.

French League Round 2 September 30th-October 1st

Games on Saturday included Landerneau being even more shorthanded against Bourges, getting a great game from Amy Okonkwo, but losing 80-58 after running out of steam in the second half. Kayana Traylor and Shakayla Thomas teamed up to lead Charnay past Isabelle Yacoubou and Tarbes 77-65. Charleville-Mezieres defeated Saint-Amand 68-55 and Landes breezed past Roche 89-52. Lyon was missing another player, but got two back from injury and a medical replacement and got a brilliant effort from Marine Fauthoux to complete a 66-63 comeback win over Angers. Villeneuve-d’Ascq finished the round with an 82-57 win over Lattes Montpellier.

Italian League Round 1 September 30th-October 1st

The regular season started with a single site slate of games in Schio. Due to there being an odd number of teams after various shuffling and machinations, newcomers Oxygen Roma had to play an exhibition alongside the teams opening on Saturday and will get to play a competitive game next weekend. Sanga Milano is one of the other newcomers and handed Shaina Pellington her overseas debut, but were welcomed to the top division with an 82-68 defeat to Stephanie Kostowicz and San Martino di Lupari, which got an overseas debut from Taylor Soule. Battipaglia’s return to this level included a tough opener that resulted in an 85-52 loss to Venezia.

On Sunday, Ragusa looked to break back into the top group with new signings like Laura Spreafico, but Bologna did enough late to win 73-67. Another matchup of teams with those ambitions saw Ashley Joens make her overseas debut for Sassari and Mya Hollingshed have a good game, but Campobasso won 79-57. Maddie Garrick led Brixia to a 61-55 win over Faenza, which got a professional debut from Essence Booker and an overseas debut from Liz Dixon, after a crazy fourth quarter. The hosts closed out the weekend with an 81-43 win over Sesto San Giovanni, which had Gina Conti making her professional debut.
