2023 African League Group Stage December 11th-15th

Alexandria, Egypt is the site of the first year of this competition under its new name and branding, but in practical terms, not much has changed, leaving a ton of room for improvement in future versions. The ten teams that qualified were split into two groups that played from Monday through Friday. After a full day of rest, the quarterfinals and the 9th place game were played on Sunday and then the rest of the knockout stage was played on Monday and Tuesday. Instead of adding the teams to the roster tracker, players on each team who would be included based on the criteria there are listed below:

December 11

The tournament opened on Monday in Group A with Customs defeating the University of Douala 57-46 behind Nkem Akaraiwe. After Rwanda’s splash on the men’s side and their growing ambitions on the national team level, there was plenty of excitement for REG’s debut as they filled their two non-African spots with the only two active WNBA players and Tiffany Mitchell led them to an 86-45 win over Overdose Up Station. The other Group B game went to Inter 80-55 over Hawks. Back in Group A, hosts and defending champions Sporting rolled to a 98-41 win over CNSS with Destiny Pitts leading the way.

December 12

The most anticipated game on Tuesday was certainly the opener with the upstarts taking on the team with the most trophies in the competition’s history. Tiffany Mitchell and Destiney Philoxy led REG to the 96-89 win, putting everyone else on notice as Ingvild Mucauro, Cristina Matiquite, and Italee Lucas led Inter. Also in Group B, Aishatou Kondoh and ASPAC made their debut and kept it close until late when Grace Irebu and Melissa Otieno helped Hawks pull away for a 87-69 win. In Group A, KPA was the last team to open their tournament and Victoria Reynolds and Madina Okot helped them dominate CNSS 82-46. Sporting continued to roll with Hagar Amer leading them to a 115-49 win over the University of Douala.

December 13

Group B opened up Wednesday’s games with Overdose Up Station defeating ASPAC 77-52. Victoria Reynolds and KPA surged past Customs 73-53 in a game that was important for Group A placement. The University of Douala pushed past CNSS 68-65 to have the edge for the last quarterfinal spot from the group. Back in Group B, the Tiffany Mitchell and Destiney Philoxy got REG another win by an 84-50 margin over Grace Irebu and Hawks.

December 14

On Thursday, Victoria Reynolds and KPA stayed undefeated in Group A with a 74-59 win over the University of Douala, which was the first team to finish group play. Inter bounced back in Group B with a 76-43 win over Overdose Up Station. Destiney Philoxy and Tiffany Mitchell made sure that REG finished the group undefeated, winning 96-65 against ASPAC. Hagar Amer led Sporting again in a 96-57 win over Customs to set up a clash to decide the group.

December 15

The game to decide third place in Group B started Friday’s action and it was Judith Pantaleo and Hawks that got past Sandrine Ayangma and Overdose Up Station 76-73. Inter made sure ASPAC finished the group winless with a 79-34 victory. In Group A, Customs eliminated CNSS and finished third with a 66-57 win behind Tomi Taiwo and Nkem Akaraiwe. Cierra Dillard and Sporting started fast to top the group after a 102-77 win over KPA.
