Overseas League Updates January 8th

Turkish League Round 19

This round started on Sunday after the cup concluded and Khadijiah Cave and G’mrice Davis helped Tarsus put on a show with Danielle Robinson recording a triple-double in their 111-70 win over Shatori Walker-Kimbrough and Cankaya University as both teams were looking for a win to end the round out of the danger zone. Both teams were shorthanded but Sehernaz Cidal’s impressive display helped her team win 86-82 despite Kelsey Bone’s efforts for Antalya. Galatasaray knew that they would have an easy win and rotated heavily with Inci Guclu as their leading scorer in a 122-56 win over Hatay. Cukurova was not at full strength after their busy cup run and well-rested Botas took advantage with an 83-79 win behind a passing clinic from Lindsay Allen. The rest of the games were on Monday and Orman was able to keep their players fresher in an 80-72 win over Bursa. Fenerbahce shuffled their lineup after the cup win and in anticipation their next game so Jaime Nared, Khaalia Hillsman, and Izmit pushed them into the second half before Kayla McBride and Natasha Howard could help the hosts win 98-91. Dana Evans and Jovana Nogic helped Besiktas pull away from Aaryn Ellenberg-Wiley, Claudia Cuic, and Kayseri in the fourth quarter for a 99-86 win to stay at the top of the tie for second place.

Asia

It was the All Star weekend in South Korea and Pink fended off Blue 90-88 with Park Ji-Su grabbing MVP honors. Series in Japan were scattered across the week with three matchups on a Tuesday-Wednesday schedule. The Sunshine Rabbits swept the Wings and the Sunflowers swept the Egrets, but the Cougars and Vickies split their games. The big Thursday-Friday series saw the Red Wave hand the Antelopes their first loss, but the league leaders did force overtime and prevail the next day. The Iris lurk behind them after a sweep of the Aranmare and Koalas stayed in the playoff hunt with a sweep of the Queen Bees.

Around Europe

Many leagues returned from holiday breaks including the Baltic, where Riga continues to lead after Gabija Meskonyte scored 33 points in a win over their reserve team. There were a number of big games in Lithuania’s second division, including 30 points from Austeja Rauckyte, 20 rebounds from Ieva Knyziene, 22 rebounds from Agne Antanaviciute, 11 steals from Justina Burbaite-Maciuliene, and a 11 point, 10 rebound, 16 assist triple-double from Austeja Sirsinaityte. Celje had a shorter break than other teams in Slovenia, but Niyah Becker and Thayna Silva each managed more than the 18 points their opponents Konjice scored on Thursday. A similar mismatch in Malta resulted in a team managing 19 points with only five players, which allowed youngsters Lisa Fenech and Vanya Baldacchio to each exceed that total with 25 points apiece. The first round of the cup was played in the British league with the next round scheduled for the coming weekend.

Chase for Promotion

Ardoi is all alone in the lead in Spain’s second division after Zamora lost, but the postseason is what will matter. Lauren Loven had a 36 point game in the third division while Barakaldo increased their lead by a game in the other group. Jordan Danberry had a 30 point game in Iceland’s second division. Amali Montout had a 20 rebounds game in an overtime loss in France’s second division, which has hit the halfway point with ten teams still holding strong playoff hopes.

A trio of teams continues to stand out in Turkey’s second division led by Zonguldak, which has Sasha Goodlett trying to become the promotion specialist and she had 31 points in their latest win. At the other end of the standings, Cierra Dillard had 30 points for Bogazici in a win to move them closer to the pack as Ionna McKenzie had 27 rebounds in the loss. Kamaria McDaniel did not stop attacking on her way to a 44 point game that got Yalova a narrow win. Angela Tompkins had 31 points in a loss while Mina Djordjevic had 21 rebounds in a battle of reserve teams that resulted in a loss.
