Overseas League Updates February 25th

Australian League Round 15 February 21st-25th

The final round of the regular season started on Wednesday with Townsville failing to clinch the top seed in the playoffs after a 77-70 loss to Mercedes Russell and Southside. A busy Saturday started with Nicole Munger and Canberra not just playing out the string and settling in last place, giving Melbourne everything that they could handle before Naz Hillmon and Jordin Canada could help the visitors leave with a 75-74 win. Brianna Turner and Adelaide took it one step further, hurting Bec Cole and Southside’s chances for the top seed with a 74-60 win. Aari McDonald and Amy Atwell helped Perth halt Kelsey Griffin and Bendigo after a tremendous run, winning 93-74 and leaving everyone waiting for the final game on Sunday. Townsville was looking for the top seed while Sydney needed a win to take the last playoff spot, but a good game from DiDi Richards was not enough and Mikaela Ruef and Zitina Aokuso helped the hosts win 90-78 and get some momentum towards their title defense.

Spanish League Round 22 February 24th-25th

Most of this round was on Saturday, starting in Madrid with Valencia’s 64-59 win over Estudiantes. Aleksandra Kroselj and Bembibre are almost officially on the wrong side of safety after losing to Gernika 80-74. Barcelona’s run continued with a 69-67 win over Araski. Celta remained in the last safe position after a 68-55 loss to Imani Tate and Ensino in Lugo. Julie Pospisilova fired Ferrol past Sedis 81-67. Gran Canaria finally showed some signs that a miracle escape could be possible after Astou Ndour led a shorthanded group past Ibaeta 75-67. The first game on Sunday saw Jairis win 69-65 against Zaragoza to be at the top of the tiebreak for the last playoff spot. In between continental adventures, Zaragoza and Avenida squared off to see who would sit in second place for now and it was Arica Carter leading the latter to a 73-69 win.

Turkish League Round 26 February 24th-25th

The round started on Saturday and Cukurova fielded the lineup that could possibly be their preference in the domestic playoffs, getting good games from Meltem Avci, Virag Kiss, and Elizabeth Williams to defeat Cankaya University 96-72. The hosts fell behind safety after the results of their closest competitors, including Bursa winning 84-69 behind Shaqwedia Wallace, offsetting a good game from Alana Smith. Tarsus also won, but they do not have the tiebreak as Khadijiah Cave and Busra Akgun paced them in a 131-92 victory over Oyku Taskin and Hatay, which fielded its starters for the entire game. At the other end of the standings, Fenerbahce stayed perfect after Natasha Howard led them in an 85-62 win over Antalya. Alaina Coates and Nesibe Aydin got an excellent win to give themselves breathing room for a spot in the playoffs, withstanding an amazing game from Lindsay Allen to edge Botas 83-82. The intense jockeying for playoff seeding continued on Sunday when Dana Evans and Besiktas won 84-79 to prevent Khaalia Hillsman and Izmit from separating themselves in the race for second place. Dearica Hamby and Aaryn Ellenberg-Wiley were brilliant for Kayseri, helping them stay tied for the last playoff spot after a 105-97 win over NaLyssa Smith, Teaira McCowan, and Galatasaray.
