Overseas League Updates April 14th

EuroLeague Finals

Sunday was the final day of competition and it started with the bronze medal game before the championship would be awarded. Cukurova might have been hoping to get a win in front of their home fans and at least a little momentum in returning to domestic league play, but Valeriane Vukosavljevic led USK Praha again, this time for a 95-67 win. The championship game started off with plenty of offense for both teams, but Villeneuve-d’Ascq could not keep up with Fenerbahce for long. Napheesa Collier and Emma Meesseman were excellent in a 106-73 win that got them a second straight title and Kayla McBride won the MVP for the entire Final Four.

Spanish League Round 29

The penultimate round started on Saturday with Ibaeta winning 89-52 at Bembibre. Celta may have the easiest game in the final round and tiebreaker advantages, but their 73-64 loss to Gernika gave them no comfort in believing they could secure safety. Zaragoza escaped Ensino 75-70. Valencia defeated Julie Pospisilova and Ferrol 79-66. Jade Loville and Astou Ndour emphatically moved Gran Canaria out of danger for now with an 83-59 win over Araski. Sunday’s games started in Murcia with Aislinn Konig and Jairis sealing up a playoff spot with a 78-65 win over Sedis. Karla Erjavec and Barcelona secured safety by rallying late for a 72-70 win over Regan Magarity and Girona. Estudiantes was looking for an upset in Madrid, but Avenida left with a 69-63 win to seal the top seed.

Italian League Round 25

With one more round to be played, all of the games in this round tipped off simultaneously on Sunday. Sassari was in danger of falling out of a playoff spot, but recovered in the fourth quarter for a 68-63 win over Faenza to set up a big game next week. Ilaria Milazzo took on a bigger scoring role for Ragusa in a 73-54 win over Sanga Milano. On other side of the chase for the last playoff spots, Taylor Soule and San Martino di Lupari now know that a win will ensure their spot in the playoffs after an 82-61 loss to Campobasso. The victors know that they will face Sesto San Giovanni, which lost 60-49 to Bologna, when the playoffs start. Teams at different ends of the standings met with the expected result as Giorgia Sottana paced Schio in a 101-51 win over Battipaglia. Oxygen Roma looked to be cruising, but had to hang on desperately to avoid what would have been a very hard to understand loss to Carlotta Zanardi and Brixia.
