2024 Olympics Game 2 July 31st-August 1st

Group A

This group started action again, this time with the first two games on Wednesday. It was the same story as their opener for Puerto Rico, falling behind early to Spain and then rallying in the second half only to still lose 63-62. Serbia pulled away from China in the second half for an 81-59 win, sending themselves and Spain through even before they play on Saturday. Puerto Rico and China play an elimination game on Saturday and then will have to wait until Sunday to find out if they advance as a third place team.

Group B

The first game in this group on Tuesday had the teams that lost their first games playing and Australia held on to a 70-65 win over Canada. The two teams that won their openers played next with a spot in the quarterfinals going to the winner and France took care of business against Nigeria 75-54. Nigeria can join them with a win on Sunday while Canada winning that game would keep them alive in the third place team standings. Australia will play France in the last game of the day with the exact knowledge of what they will need to do, but winning would be enough in any circumstance. If Canada wins, an Australia loss would create a three-way tie for second place so margins in all the games not involving France would come into play while if Canada loses, Australia would know how much they can lose by while not losing the tiebreaker against the third place teams in the other groups.

Group C

The first game on Thursday was in this group and it was one of the group stage’s most intriguing matchups with the small lineup of Japan going up against the big lineup of Germany. Satou Sabally proved to be too hard to stop and Germany grabbed their quarterfinal place with a 75-64 win. In the last game of the day, Emma Meesseman and Belgium fought hard, but could not keep up with the United States, which grabbed a spot in the quarterfinals after an 87-74 win behind the combination of Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson. Their game against Germany on Sunday will be for bracket placement while Japan and Belgium play an elimination game. Those two teams will have the benefit of seeing the margin for Group A’s third place team, but they will not have full knowledge of Group B’s situation.
