Around Europe

After a long break, the Central European league returned featuring eight teams from four countries. The first set of games was three consecutive days of play in two different locations in Slovakia. One group played in Piestany and hosts Piestanske Cajky won all their games followed by Ostrava and Hradec Kralove from Czechia and winless Triglav from Slovenia. The other group played in Ruzomberok and the hosts won all their games, followed by Brandys nad Labem from Czechia, Slavia Banska Bystrica of Slovakia, and winless Graz from Austria. Another cross-national league started with the Baltic doubling as the top division for Lithuania and Sydney Taylor had 31 points in Kibirkstis’s win over Neptunas.

A number of national top division leagues started play including Sweden, Slovenia, Serbia, Estonia, Czechia, and Austria. Shannon Ryan had 22 rebounds in the opener in Switzerland. In Slovakia, Ruzomberok had Ana Kaluzna, Putra Yvhenia Putra, Diana Mikovcakova, and Maria Stefancova each outscored the opposition and then Lucia Hadacova had 11 steals, but Trencin got 23 rebounds from Viktoria Rostotska in their next loss, which was far closer. Darcy Rees had a 30 point game in Germany’s opening weekend. Katarina Trehub had 21 rebounds in the opener in Croatia. In Luxembourg, Alexus Johnson had a 33 point, 17 rebound, 10 assist triple-double.

Benfica won their second trophy in Portugal already after winning the super cup. The super cup was also played to start the season in Malta and Depiro defeated Luxol. Iceland’s super cup ended up being a fantastic game, but Thor won after getting 31 points from Amandine Toi and a 21 point, 28 rebound, 11 assist triple-double from Maddie Sutton.

After the league structure collapsed, there was worry about the British league being able to play, but the new entity was able to get cup play started this week and Harriet Welham led Ipswich with 31 points in an easy win over London Lions, which will now try to navigate fielding a team in a different financial state. Cup play continued in Greece with top division teams joining in this round and Kaylynne Truong’s 32 point effort in her professional debut was not enough for PAOK to win. The biggest statline in Turkey’s second division was a 30 point, 20 rebound game from Zakyia Weathersby.
