Overseas League Updates October 6th

Spanish League Round 1

The regular season started on Friday with league newcomers Ardoi getting to play at home, but drawing the tough task of welcoming powerhouse Avenida. The hosts put up quite a fight as Aixa Wone made her professional debut in her home country, but the visitors secured the 78-64 win. A busy Saturday started with Jairis defeating Ibaeta 67-59. Also in Basque Country, Ensino won 74-66 at Gernika. Sedis handed professional debuts to Azana Baines, Bella Murekatete, Kiki Jefferson, and Violeta Verano, but were edged out by Chloe Bibby and Girona 80-77. Ferrol had the benefit of two competitive games already when they defeated Araski 70-59. Sophia Wiard made her professional debut for Estudiantes, defeating Celta, which got a long-awaited professional debut from Brynna Maxwell. Gran Canaria got a reprieve in the top division when Barcelona dropped down instead, but had the tough task of hosting Zaragoza, losing 87-47. Joventut Badalona also had a tough game in their start in the top division, getting a great game from Mariam Coulibaly in a loss to Valencia.

Most of the games in this round were on Saturday, including Lattes Montpellier’s 75-59 win over Landerneau. Overtime was needed for Charnay to spoil Chartres’s home opener 73-70. Landes put down a marker in their bid to be considered the title favorites in a 68-55 win over Bourges. Camille Droguet’s scoring and Murjanatu Musa’s impressive defense helps Tarbes get the 73-55 win over Charleville-Mezieres. Angers won at Roche 66-46. Villeneuve-d’Ascq’s rough start to the season continued on Sunday after Dominique Malonga had a fantastic game in Lyon’s 69-57 win.

Turkish League Round 2

Zonguldak is still unable to field a team, leaving two games on Saturday without their game against Fenerbahce. Emlak Konut held off Courtney Hurt and Tarsus 78-74. Nesibe Aydin had the bye in the first round and a good game from Sydney Wallace was not enough as Regan Magarity and Iliana Rupert led Cukurova in scoring and Marine Fauthoux put on a passing clinic. The first game on Sunday was excellent as Botas was at full strength, but it was not enough against Crystal Dangerfield and Kayseri in an 84-82 loss. The two newcomers met and Yagmur Tasar and Li Yueru led Bodrum past Terezia Palenikova and Bursa Ant 87-65. Orman had the unplanned bye in the first game and lost to Galatasaray to close the day.

The regular season started on Saturday and Robbi Ryan and Sleza Wroclaw were looking for a big road win, but Emma Cannon and Polkowice recovered from a tough midweek game to win 79-74. Tai’Sheka Porchia made her professional debut for Bydgoszcz, but they lost to Zaglebie Sosnowiec 76-51. Sunday started with Stella Johnson leading Lublin in a 77-59 win over Polonia Warszawa. Savannah Wheeler had an impressive professional debut for Torun in a 93-77 win over Britney Jones and Poznan, which got an overseas debut from Jessika Carter. Stephanie Jones and Ruthy Hebard helped Gdynia finish the day with a 90-71 win over a Gorzow side that got a great game from Elena Tsineke and a strong professional debut from Rebeka Mikulasikova, also fielding rookies Kennedy Brown and Lauren Hansen.

A busy Saturday started with Reka Lelik helping DVTK roll past Szigetszentmiklos 87-35. Marena Whittle paced Szekszard in a easy 91-52 win over Cegled. BEAC added to their lineup, but Domonique Davis and Vasas left with a 76-71 win. Aliz Varga led Sopron in a 100-71 win over Gabriella Laufer and David Kornei. Debora Dubei and Virag Kiss teamed up to lead Gyor to a 97-51 win over Darazsak. On Sunday, Ashten Prechtel and hard-luck MTK came up just short against Julia Reisingerova and PEAC, leaving the standings in the unusual position of half the league being 3-0 and the other half being 0-3.

The first round at home sites started on Saturday with Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah and Aleksandra Ziemborska teaming up to lead Campobasso past Derthona 79-70 in Castelnuovo Scrivia. Kitija Laksa and Martina Bestagno helped Schio roll past Battipaglia 102-62. Venezia finished the day with an 80-60 win over Alpo in Verona. Sparkle Taylor fired Sassari past Faenza in the first game on Sunday 92-65. San Martino di Lupari had the bye in the first week and played the last game of the day, getting professional debuts from Anne Simon and Amari Robinson while waiting for the last player on the roster, losing 62-60 to Sesto San Giovanni.
