African Qualifiers

Zone 5

Eleven teams made their way to Tanzania to compete for two automatic bids from this zone. The teams were divided into three groups for the first stage from Sunday through Wednesday and then the playoff bracket started on Thursday and the eliminated teams played a round-robin to determine their final placements. The top two teams from each group were joined by the top two third place teams and then seeded on group performance for the quarterfinals.

Not all teams brought players who would fit our roster tracker, but here are the ones who did:
Al Ahly: Meral Abdelgawad, Western Kentucky; Raneem Elgedawy, Western Kentucky; Paulina Hersler, Florida; Reem Moussa, Rice; Nadine Soliman, UNC Greensboro
Young Sisters: Jolie Mukesha, Langara [CCAA]; Taudencia Oluoch, Abilene Christian
APR: Italee Lucas, North Carolina; Chanel Mokango, Mississippi State; Shaina Pellington, Oklahoma
REG: Kristina King, West Virginia; Destiny Philoxy, Massachusetts; Victoria Reynolds, William and Mary

Group A

This group closed Sunday’s action with a Noela Uwandameno and Vijana Queens of Tanzania get the 91-77 win over Elsa Niyonkuru and Young Sisters of Burundi. Dolphins of Uganda was not able to get their whole team to Monday’s opener in time and had no available substitutes, but Evelyne Nikiyingi and Hope Akello helped them easily defeat Young Sisters 91-54. Egypt’s Al Ahly had arguably been the top team on the continent for years, but had not been willing to participate. They made their debut in stunning fashion, racing past Vijana Queens with big scoring days from Nadine Soliman, Meral Abdelgawad, and Raneem Elgedawy. They did not slow down on Tuesday, defeating Young Sisters 134-35. Dolphins added the four remaining players that they would have for their game against Vijana Queens, an 87-55 win. The top two teams finished off group play on Wednesday and Soliman and Elgedawy and Al Ahly defeated Dolphins 100-61.

That left Saturday’s game determining 10th place and Jescal Ngisaise was fantastic for Fox Divas to leave Lidiya Uduru and Hawassa City winless 79-50.

Makomeno was the last team to make their debut and they got to play a familiar foe in fellow Democratic Republic of Congo team CNSS. Their opponents had more experience at this level, but Makomeno brought in a solid group of foreign players and won decisively 73-46.
