Overseas League Update January 20th

Turkish League Round 18

This round started with a stunning result on Saturday after Orman handed Fenerbahce their first loss in any competition this season and first loss in over a full calendar year 72-59. The other game at that time featured no surprises as Galatasaray coasted past Bodrum 100-27. Jaime Nared and Nesibe Aydin closed the day with a 75-71 win over Beatrice Mompremier and Bursa Ant. On Sunday, Cukurova got a test from Damiris Dantas and Botas, but Iliana Rupert helped them recover in the second half for a 77-73 win. Aerial Powers and Kayseri defeated Jillian Alleyne and Tarsus in the other game. Since this was the round where Zonguldak had been scheduled for the bye, all teams were in action and the last game was on Monday with Holly Winterburn and Temi Fagbenle trying to get the win for Besiktas, but Jessica Thomas helped the newest Istanbul team prevail 84-79.

Polish League Round 14

Most of this round was played on Saturday, starting with Magdalena Szymkiewicz and Lublin getting an easy 82-58 win over Bydgoszcz. It was Torun’s turn to face Julia Jeziorna and depleted Polkowice and it was Sarah Mortensen and Martyna Walczak providing the scoring and Savannah Wheeler tossing dimes in their 111-46 win. Arka Gdynia ended the day with an 81-66 win over Kamila Borkowska and Zaglebie Sosnowiec. Jessika Carter and Poznan won 78-74 at Gorzow on Sunday. Robbi Ryan was fantastic on Monday in Sleza Wroclaw’s 70-67 win over Polonia Warszawa.

World of Basketball

Asia

All the series in Japan were on a Saturday-Sunday schedule and the Red Wave are still firmly in first place even after a close win and then dropping a game to the Sunflowers. The Iris could not get closer after their own split against the Wings. The Cougars are still in last place by a large margin after being swept by the Magic. The Antelopes also picked up a sweep even though Dimaro Jessica Wariebimo Ere had 20 rebounds for the Sunshine Rabbits in the second game. All the series in the second division were sweeps with the Koalas defeating the Rabbits, the Vickies defeating the Aranmare, and the Queen Bees defeating the Egrets.

Another full week started in South Korea with a tense affair on Wednesday that saw Woori Bank do enough to defeat Hana Bank. BNK stayed in first place after edging the Blue Minx on Thursday. The Stars stayed clear of last place with a win over Hana Bank on Friday. The S-Birds stayed ahead of them with their win over Woori Bank on Saturday. The Blue Minx avenged their loss on Sunday, but BNK remained ahead of the field. The S-Birds capped off a successful week on Monday with their win over Hana Bank.

In Saudi Arabia, two excellent performances could not prevent losses. Farhiya Abdi had 35 points, but Al Ula lost to Al Ahli. Houda Hamrouni’s 34 points came in Al Ittihad’s loss to Al Nassr. Sara Dickey’s 35 points did help Al Qadisiyah get the win over last place Al Okhdood.

Another pod of games was played in Taiwan this week as it was Taiyuan Textile getting the Sunday win over Cathay Life to win all of their games. Chunghwa Telecom edged Taipower in the day’s other game in the battle of winless teams.

Around Europe

The cup semifinals were played in Luxembourg this weekend and Alexus Johnson had 20 rebounds to prevent two upsets as Grengewald Hueschtert will face Sparta Bertrange in the final. The cup quarterfinals were played in Iceland this weekend and included a 23 point, 10 rebound, 10 assist triple-double from Brittany Dinkins and a 20 rebound game from Carlotta Ellenrieder. In league play earlier, Denia Davis-Stewart had 21 rebounds and Randi Brown had 34 points while one game featured 37 points from Jasmine Dickey in the win and 34 points from Daisha Bradford in the loss.

Chase for Promotion

A break from league play was taken in Turkey’s second division with the top eight teams from the first half of the season chasing the Federation Cup. Home site quarterfinals were played on Tuesday and Wednesday before the semifinals and finals were played on Friday and Sunday in Istanbul. Danielle Adams had the game of the quarterfinals with her 39 point, 20 rebound effort helping Adana advance. The competition being separate did not make the results any different from league play so far as Edremit won the final against Turgutlu behind 33 points from Channon Fluker after she had 34 points in their quarterfinal win.

Lydia Rivers grabbed 20 rebounds in Spain’s second division. In Lithuania’s second division, Olga Fomina had a 33 point effort and Neringa Birietiene poured in 42 points. Cheah Rael-Whitsitt had 30 points in Iceland’s second division. Sophia Nolan had 35 points in a double-overtime win in Germany’s second division. Toulouse lost in France’s second division, falling back into a tie with Mondeville and Montbrison for first place. Stepha M’Baye had 30 points for Feytiat, which lurks behind that lead group.

Notable Individual Performances

A double round week in Switzerland meant a number of big statlines. Shannon Ryan and Nicole Flennaugh had 30 points each in a win for Baden despite 30 points for Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman for the opposition and then their teammate Annika Soltau had 32 points in their next game for another win. That result came despite Julia Chadwick’s 34 points as she had 20 rebounds in their other game while Melyssa Dutruel had 31 points. Sam Breen recorded a 30 point, 22 rebound, 14 assist triple-double and Viktoria Ranisavljevic had a 32 point game.

Olga Yatskovets had 33 points in a game in Slovakia, which ended up being enough on their own for her team to win and then had 33 points in her next game as well. Genesis Rivera had 34 points in a loss in Portugal. Milena Vujovic had a 34 point game in Montenegro. Two Latvian teams met in the Baltic with Mia Loyd’s 46 points securing a win. Teams returned from the break in Kosovo and Abby Ogle had 34 points and 10 steals to seal a win for her team, offsetting Jeanae Terry’s 40 point, 20 rebound, 10 assist triple-double. Claire Jacobs had a 31 point game in the British league. Jada Lewis had a 30 point game in Finland. Emese Hof had 32 points in the Czech league. Madison Torresin had 34 points in Cyprus. Natasa Sobot had 35 points in the Bosnian league. Aliyah Kenny had 20 rebounds in Belgium.

In Malta, Olesia Malashenko had 23 rebounds and Janai Crooms had 48 points in a game where Ashiala Jackson had 35 points in the loss. Jessica Shepard had 32 rebounds in a game in Greece and nearly matched it in the scoring column while Ayana Emmanuel had a 30 point game and Graceann Bennett had a 20 rebound game. In Croatia, Tamia Lawhorne had 32 points in an overtime win while Aliyah-Deen Ahmad had a 30 point game. In Albania, Bernada Rreshpja had 35 points and Aniylah Bryant had 34 points.
