Five teams headed to Cairo to compete for the automatic spot in the continental competition available from this zone. The teams started with a four-game round-robin over five days with the bottom team done at that point and the top two teams meeting for the championship and the next two teams playing for placement.
On Monday, the first game saw Uganda defeat Kenya 78-56 behind Jane Asinde. Hosts Egypt played next and had no trouble with Burundi as Nadine Soliman and Raneem Elgedawy led them to a 102-40 win. South Sudan was the last team to make their debut and Delicia Washington led them in an 86-69 win over Kenya. Egypt had a tough test from Paige Robinson and Uganda, but prevailed 65-62 behind Raneem Elgedawy. Wednesday started with Victoria Reynolds and Kenya getting an 87-53 win over Ines Nezerwa and Burundi. Uganda put themselves in good position to advance to the championship game after Jane Asinde led them in an 83-69 win over Delicia Washington and South Sudan.
Uganda won the first game on Thursday 66-30 over Burundi, meaning that the second game could set the matchup in the championship. They ended up being joined by Egypt after Raneem Elgedawy led the hosts in an 85-64 win over Nyamuoch Pidor Teny and South Sudan. The first game on Friday would determine which team would not play on the final day and it was Burundi that completed a winless tournament with their 77-46 loss to South Sudan. Egypt finished the group stage undefeated after Nadine Soliman paced them in a 84-62 win over Victoria Reynolds and Kenya. The bronze medal game was first on Saturday and Delicia Washington helped South Sudan start fast to defeat Victoria Reynolds and Kenya 80-63. The championship game would determine which team would grab the automatic berth from the zone and Uganda avenged their early defeat and prevailed 74-63 over Egypt.
