World of Basketball February 10th

Asia

There was a full week of games in South Korea, starting with Hana Bank defeating the Stars on Wednesday to get closer at the bottom of the standings. The teams at the top of the standings met on Thursday and BNK was able to get the win at Woori Bank. Hana Bank’s run continued on Friday with a win over the Blue Minx. The S-Birds got ahead of the Stars with a 52-46 win on Saturday. Kim Dan-Bi’s 31 point game helped Woori Bank defeat the Blue Minx on Sunday. The week ended with overtime on Monday as the Stars surprised BNK to knock them out of the first place tie.

Instead of home and away games, Kazakhstan set up a single-site round-robin, but Aqtobe’s withdrawal left each team with one bye. After three days of games, Astana continued rolling through the competition while Turan’s win over Okzhetpes moved them into second place in the loss column.

North West Tasmania

The long-running competition in eight small towns across North West Tasmania started on Thursday with all teams in action. The biggest win came from the Latrobe Demons over the Smithton Saints. Bailie Wickham was the leading scorer with 34 points in a Somerset Heat win over the Wynyard Wildcats. Ava McDonald had 33 points in a Penguin Blues win over the Ulverstone Hoppers. The Devonport Warriors won the other game against the Burnie Tigers.

Mexico

There were four more series this weekend including a battle of newcomers that saw Universidad Modelo sweep Penguins. Mieleras had an easy sweep of Mineras and Libelulas picked up two big wins over Toritas. Avispas avoided being swept at home by salvaging a split with Husky’s

Around Europe

With the international break, most top division leagues around the continent did not play this week. Cristina Culea had a 12 point, 10 rebound, 10 assist triple-double in Moldova. Olesia Malashenko had 21 rebounds in Malta. Carolina Rakhonen had 31 points in Estonia. Mariah Miller had an impressive 33 point, 27 rebound game in Cyprus and Kyriaki Taylor grabbed 21 rebounds in a loss. The cup was awarded in Albania and quarterfinals on Wednesday include a 36 point game from Aniylah Bryant in a win when Bernada Rreshpja scored 31 points in the loss. Liliane Ikete secured 23 rebounds to help Tirana win their semifinal on Friday and then they defeated Partizani on Saturday in the championship game.

Chase for Promotion

Doniyah Cliney was the leading scorer in Turkey’s second division with 42 points in a loss after Shelby Cheslek had a 24 point, 22 rebound, 16 assist triple-double for the opposition. Yacine Diop had a 36 point game. Josefina Zeballos had a 30 point game in Spain’s third division. Ioana Istratescu had a 34 point game in Romania’s second division. In Portugal’s second division, Emma Huff had 31 points and Morgan Smith had 20 rebounds. Egle Juceviciute had a 23 rebound game in Lithuania’s second division. In Iceland’s second division, Asdis Jonsdottir had 38 points and Brazil Harvey-Carr had 21 rebounds.
