Overseas League Updates March 23rd

Turkish Cup

The cup was contested this week with quarterfinals scattered across the country before the remaining teams headed to a single site. The first game on Tuesday saw Fenerbahce quickly show their championship form with a 97-57 win over Nesibe Aydin. Tarsus did not have near the roster at the end of the season as they did when they qualified for this competition and Jillian Alleyne did all that she could against their neighbors, but Pelin Bilgic and Cukurova started the second half with a massive run to win 98-71. The other two games were on Wednesday in Istanbul and Victoria Macaulay led her team to an 86-67 win over Damiris Dantas and Botas in the early game. City rivals met with Temi Fagbenle’s return to the Besiktas lineup being a big help in their 81-67 win over Galatasaray.

The remaining teams headed to Edirne for Friday’s semifinals and the first game was the latest titanic clash between teams with their eyes on three trophies down the stretch. Cukurova has Teaira McCowan back for this critical run and she helped them use a spectacular start to stun Fenerbahce 78-57 despite the best efforts of Gabby Williams. The result sends a big message ahead of potential continental and league matchups. The other game also went to a recent upstart as Jessica Thomas and Robyn Parks were spectacular in a 91-86 win over Temi Fagbenle and Besiktas. Sunday’s championship was all Teaira McCowan and Cukurova as they won 85-64 ahead of chasing two more big trophies.

Spanish Cup

The Queen’s Cup started on Thursday with two of the quarterfinal games. Gernika had an upset on their minds early as they faced the league leaders, but Chloe Bibby and Girona started the second half strong to win 71-68. That upset did come in the second game though when Jairis knocked out defending champions Valencia 70-53. Friday’s games continued the theme as Juana Camilion and Estudiantes held a lead into the second half, but Avenida got the 66-64 win. Hosts Zaragoza also trailed in the first half, but advanced with a 56-42 win over Gran Canaria.

The semifinals were played on Saturday and the run of excellent games continued with an overtime thriller in the first game. Chloe Bibby and Girona were able to get the game to the extra period, but Aina Ayuso and Jairis prevailed 71-67. Avenida built a big lead and held off Zaragoza 70-66 to advance to Sunday’s final. On Sunday, Jairis was looking to finish knocking off all three teams at the top of the standings in the league and Lou Lopez Senechal fired them to a big lead after halftime. Avenida tried a dramatic rally in the fourth quarter, but came up short 67-59, sending the trophy to a surprising new home in Murcia.

French League Round 20

This round started on Friday with Kendall Cooper and Chartres making it close late, but losing again, this time to Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu and Lattes Montpellier 74-73. Villeneuve-d’Ascq looked ready to get into that last playoff spot early on Saturday, but Landes used a massive run late to leave with a 55-51 win. Evelyn Akhator and Landerneau took advantage, using a massive late run to get a 75-68 win over Sara Chevaugeon and Charleville-Mezieres. Angers defeated Lyon 59-53. On Sunday, Murjanatu Musa and Tarbes took a big step towards grabbing the last playoff spot with a 92-80 win over Roche. With the top seed sealed, there has been some speculation about how much Bourges would focus on their remaining league games with three competitions on the line for the rest of the season. They fought back to force overtime, but Shakayla Thomas and Charnay were able to help their own playoff seeding with a 100-89 double-overtime win.

Hungarian Cup

After winning their quarterfinals earlier in the year, the last four teams made it to the final stage this weekend with semifinals on Saturday. Virag Kiss and Gyor built an early lead in the first game and then held off MTK 74-67. Kaila Charles and DVTK looked to be in a strong position, but Julia Reisingerova and PEAC nearly finished a spectacular comeback before falling short 71-70. The bronze medal game was first on Sunday and it was Lexi Held leading PEAC in their 97-72 win over Ashten Prechtel and MTK. The final ended up being a great game with Reka Dombai and Gyor taking the lead early only to see Kaila Charles and DVTK dominate the second half and take momentum into the playoffs with an 87-81 win.
