It was cup final weekend in France with six trophies awarded. Friday’s night’s games included the senior team women’s cup for clubs in amateur leagues and Rouen defeated Monaco 60-52. The youth cup final was on Saturday with several big names and Lyon got the 62-55 win over Bourges. That set the stage for the pro cup championship and Charleville-Mezieres took the lead early in the first half with their momentum from this week. Kariata Diaby and Bourges wanted to end the season on a winning note and fought back in the second half, but could not finish the job, losing 70-67 to leave plenty of uncertainty about their continental fate for next season as they watch the rest of the playoffs at home.

After a high-scoring first quarter, Ourinhos had to grind out a win over Campinas on Saturday. Sunday’s game was extremely close with Mesquita finally edging Cerrado.

The newer of Mexico’s national leagues started play with series conducted on a Friday-Saturday format. While some of their signings brought greater attention to the league season, the competition this year did not end up being at the scale that was hoped as the league had to scramble just to get to eight teams during a time when clubs that only field men’s teams are supposed to be fined if they do not field a women’s team. Newer to the league in general, Cancun completed the first series with a sweep over Veracruz. Chihuahua is expected to be tough again and swept Leon. Irapuato picked up a pair of wins over Tamaulipas and Aguascalientes finished the weekend with a sweep of Monterrey.

The semifinals were this week in El Salvador and neither series ended in a sweep on Saturday so deciding games were needed on Sunday. French League Playdowns Game 5 May 7th

The critical games in this phase were on Wednesday. Villeneuve-d’Ascq looked ready to be a thorn in the side of all of the teams again, but Landerneau knew that a win would secure safety and Nausia Woolfolk and Evelyn Akhator made sure that happened 75-73. The possibility of that result simplified the math in the other game with Chartres trying to get a big enough win at home to flip the tiebreaker with Roche, which was looking to keep the margin close if they could not win outright. Nicole Enabosi led the hosts again, but Brooke McCarty-Williams led the way for Roche, meaning that a 74-67 loss was enough to secure their safety and send Chartres straight back down a level.
