Overseas League Updates September 18th

Turkish League Round 2 September 16th-18th

The round started on Saturday with Chastity Reed and Tarsus looking for a top division win, but Destanni Henderson and Aisha Sheppard led Antalya in an 87-70 triumph. A battle of Istanbul had Besiktas fall short 51-46, not giving themselves much momentum for a critical midweek game. The schedule continued not be conducive to fun midseason matchups on Sunday when Emma Meesseman led Fenerbahce past their great rivals Galatasaray 84-56. Hatay returned to play for the first time since the earthquake, but a good game from Katrina Pardee was not enough in an 87-56 loss to Orman. Jaime Nared led Izmit to an impressive 76-71 win over Cukurova. Jessica Thomas led Nesibe Aydin to an 82-68 win over Gintare Petronyte and Kayseri to end the day. The round ended on Monday with Tuba Poyraz leading Bursa and getting help from Trinity Baptiste and Kiana Williams, meaning that an incredible game from Brooke McCarty-Williams still left Cankaya University short 102-73.

Arab Club Championship

After the earthquake in Morocco, the teams and confederation had to determine whether to cancel the tournament, postpone it until it could be completed, or to change the schedule. There was no mass desire to try to just resume it later so one final game was played on Tuesday to award the trophy. Hosts Kawkab defeated Cosider to conclude the competition.

Americas

The playoffs started in Uruguay with one semifinals series concluding already. Malvin had an easy win over Yale on Wednesday and then finished the sweep on Saturday as they prepared for continental competition. The other series started on Sunday with Aguada cruising past Defensor Sporting.

The end of the regular season is close after the latest week of games in Puerto Rico, including three contests on Tuesday. Manati’s late recovery was not enough in a loss to Carolina, Santurce held off Morovis’s comeback, and Hatillo heaped more misery on Lares. On Wednesday, Ariana Moorer’s 31 points helped Isabela complete a comeback against Moca. Morovis showed how strong that they could have been if they had started the season at full strength in a win over Manati on Thursday. Moca defeated Santurce on Friday while Ariana Moorer had an 18 point, 17 rebound, 10 assist triple-double to help Isabela win against fellow newcomers Hatillo, which got 20 rebounds from Dariauna Lewis. Manati bounced back on Saturday with a win over Carolina. On Sunday, Alexis Jennings had 33 points to help Moca fend off Morovis while Santurce had an easy win over Isabela.

Europe

A number of competitions were played around Europe this weekend with most leagues still not starting play yet. The Netherlands was the second top division to start play when they had their first round on Saturday. Portugal awarded their first trophy of the season in an unusual tournament that features abbreviated games until the final on Sunday, which Benfica won over GDESSA Barreiro to start the process of avenging their surprise defeat in last season’s championship series. The second division in Sweden also started play, although it is not a competition that is usually covered here.
