Overseas League Updates October 16th

Turkish League Round 6 October 14th-16th

The round started on Saturday with only Alexis Tolefree playing in a foreign slot for Hatay against the four for Izmit, which meant that Khaalia Hillsman was able to rack up spectacular stats and Jaime Nared also had a strong game after they broke it open for a 104-70 win. Cukurova was able to field what it felt would be its strongest domestic league lineup, but it did not work out as planned even with a good game from Elizabeth Williams as Emma Cannon and Ilayda Guner helped Nesibe Aydin win 88-79. Fenerbahce finished the day with Kayla McBride and Emma Meesseman leading them to a 93-61 win over Lyndra Weaver and Botas. On Sunday, Galatasaray got balanced production from all four foreign players Myisha Hines-Allen, Mikiah Herbert Harrigan, Tiffany Mitchell, and Julie Vanloo in a 103-78 win over Trinity Baptiste, Tuba Poyraz, and Bursa. The trio of Kelsey Bone, Destanni Henderson, and Aisha Sheppard could not help Antalya keep pace with Cankaya University, falling to the duo of Brooke McCarty-Williams and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough 103-88. The close game of the day saw Damiris Dantas and Goksen Fitik help Orman edge Khadijiah Cave and Tarsus 78-77. The round ended with a Monday game that saw Aaryn Ellenberg-Wiley lead Kayseri to an 80-63 win.

Americas

The finals continued in Puerto Rico on Wednesday with a Carolina stealing a game on the road at Manati. The format of alternating sites continued with a short turnaround on Thursday with the 40 mile trip east and Manati’s fourth quarter helped them tie the series back up again. Both teams were looking to move within a game of the championship on Saturday and the road trend continued with Carolina’s early lead holding up late. Teana Muldrow made sure that there would be no more games after Monday, leading Carolina with 34 points to seal the championship.

In Uruguay, Lagomar won on both Tuesday and Saturday to secure the consolation championship. Aguada built an advantage in the championship series with a win on Wednesday behind 32 points from Camila Kirschenbaum. Malvin hosted on Monday and built a lead before grinding out a win to even the series up again. In Argentina, the last two undefeated teams in the North met on Saturday with Ameghino getting a decisive win over Olimpico La Banda.

Asia

The schedules in Asia are affected by the Asian Games timing this year, but Japan did start play under their traditional format where the teams play on Saturday and Sunday in the same venue. The only split came in the series between the Koalas and the Cougars as the Iris, Antelopes, Magic, Sunflowers, Red Wave, and Sunshine Rabbits recorded sweeps.

Around Europe

A few more leagues started play this week, including Ukraine, where the teams were divided into two levels after the number of mismatches last season. The number of teams increased in Romania so that they could be divided into two divisions and both started play with young Elina Herban grabbing 21 rebounds in one game. Latvia also started play although the top teams are not involved in this competition and are instead playing in the Baltic. Albania started their league season as well. All the teams were in action at the same time in the Adriatic and Addison Richards had 30 points for Bulgarian representatives Montana. It was the second round of the cup in Germany, which meant that the top division teams joined the fray, setting up a battle of Osnabruck clubs and Michaela VanderKlugt had a 32 point game.

Chase for Promotion

Milda Sauliute just could not score quite enough to record a quadruple-double in Lithuania’s second division at the age of 42, settling for a 11 rebound, 11 assist, and 10 steal triple-double. Edremit and Zonguldak continue to lead the way in Turkey’s second division. Kamaria McDaniel was the week’s top scorer with 34 points while Aliyah Collier hit the 33 point mark. Klaudia Niedzwiedzka was the standout performer in Italy’s second division with 30 points. Barbara Zieniewska had a 33 point game in Iceland’s second division while Emese Vida turned in 30 points.
