Olympic Qualifying Game 2 February 10th

Xi’an

Two groups continued play on Saturday, starting here with the two teams that won on opening day. France did not have qualification at stake, but certainly sent a message about where they stand in the hierarchy when they host the main event, crushing Li Meng and China 82-50. That set the stage for the most important game and Stella Beck and New Zealand had the early lead, but Mya Hollingshed and Puerto Rico built a lead by halftime and did just enough late for a 69-67 win. That result sent both Puerto Rico and China through to the Olympics and left nothing to fight for on Sunday.

The winner of the first game in this group would be the first to secure qualification and it was Australia that looked strong from tipoff to defeat a shorthanded Germany 85-52. Hosts Brazil had a fast start, but Yvonne Anderson helped Serbia control the rest of the game for a 72-65 win. The result of the Serbia-Australia game will determine whether Brazil just needs an outright win against Germany or whether the margin will come into play.
