Olympic Qualifying Game 3 February 11th

Xi’an

A busy Sunday started in this group, where there was nothing at stake. Gabby Williams and France ended a very successful preparation with a 94-39 win over a New Zealand team ready to just move on to the next tournament. Li Meng and Li Yueru sent the fans home happy with a 105-69 win over Arella Guirantes and Puerto Rico.

All the teams in this group still had the chance to advance on the final day. Evelyn Mawuli and Mai Yamamoto helped Japan secure the first spot 86-82 and leave Canada nervously watching the last game. That result made Spain the second team to advance and it looked like they might just coast and let Hungary advance too early in the game, but the hosts collapsed in the final quarter and the visitors escaped with a 73-72 win, putting Canada through too.

The last group of the day would also see the first game determine the scenarios for the final game. It looked like Serbia would take advantage of Australia not having as much at stake having already qualified, but even another good game for Yvonne Anderson was not enough in a 75-73 loss, leaving the last game determining two spots. Damiris Dantas and Brazil knew that they would need a decisive win to qualify. Germany had their full lineup available with Satou Sabally and Leonie Fiebich as their stars and while the game was close throughout, they kept it in a manageable position to advance and did enough late to secure a 73-71 win, eliminating the hosts and completing the field alongside Serbia.
