Overseas League Updates April 20th

Hungarian League Semifinals Game 1

Playoffs

After a long break, the quest for the championship finally resumed on Saturday. Jacinta Monroe and Szekszard had the lead on the road in the first half, but Kristine Anigwe and Gyor recovered to win 83-75. DVTK had dominated the regular season, but were certainly wary of the threat that Sopron posed, taking care of business early in Miskolc behind Darcee Garbin for a 76-54 win. Each series will shift venues on Tuesday with the home teams looking to stay in championship contention and the visitors looking to advance.

Spanish League Round 30

The last day of the regular season meant simultaneous tipoffs of all the games on Saturday. Even with nothing to play for, Araski took the last game at home seriously and defeated Jairis 73-67. Ferrol clinched a playoff spot with a 71-63 win over Estudiantes. Those two results meant that Girona would hold their position even with a loss while Gran Canaria knew that they needed a win to avoid dropping down to the second division. The hosts did no favors though and sent the visitors packing 78-73 despite the best efforts of scoring title winner Jade Loville as they could not get enough from their main rotation of six players. Ibaeta clinched a playoff spot and kept Ensino out 70-63. Alina Iagupova led Valencia, which strengthened their roster right before the playoffs, in a 74-60 win over Sedis. Celta needed a win and help to climb out of the danger zone and the win part was as easy as expected with Elba Garfella and Murjanatu Musa helping them end Bembibre’s nightmare season 94-57. Avenida had already clinched the top seed, but made quick work of Gernika to leave the visitors outside the playoffs. Zaragoza won 80-56 against Barcelona to prepare for their postseason.

Italian League Round 26

The final Saturday of the regular season meant all teams tipped off simultaneously besides Faenza, which had the bye in this round. San Martino di Lupari hosted Sassari knowing that they needed a win to make the playoffs and they got the 78-73 win over Debora Carangelo and company, eventually moving up another spot by tiebreaker, leaving the visitors in the one spot in the standings with no postseason play attached. Schio knew by the second half that they had virtually no chance to move up to the top seed, still winning 87-72 over Susanna Toffali and Sanga Milano behind Dorka Juhasz. Sesto San Giovanni defeated Brixia 64-61. Jessica Shepard and Venezia secured the top seed with a 79-55 win and they will face Oxygen Roma again in the quarterfinals after other results. With Ragusa stuck in their seed, Battipaglia took advantage to climb one spot that could be critical in the battle to avoid being the lone team to drop down to the second division after a 91-87 overtime win led by Paola Ferrari, offsetting Oderah Chidom’s excellent game. Bologna edged Campobasso 60-59 with neither team able to change their seed.
