Toronto is awarded a new WNBA expansion team – My Thoughts & Feelings

Toronto WNBA team

Two weeks ago, it was reported by CBC that Toronto would be awarded a new WNBA expansion franchise and today, the WNBA made it official. It will be the first team outside the United States. It will be the 14th team and will begin play in the year 2026.

It is truly very exciting. I could not be more thrilled. To be able to have the opportunity to sit in a Canadian arena and to be able to sit and observe and write about the WNBA is awesome. I have been wanting a WNBA team in Toronto since I was an 18 year old girl. I got the opportunity last year to have the first ever WNBA Canada Game last year and I was able to sit in the media section as a member of Her Hoop Stats. I wrote about that experience last year. You can read it here.

As a blogger/freelance writer, I could not be more grateful and excited that Toronto will finally have a team. I can literally take the subway (TTC) downtown and be in the Coca-Cola Coliseum at the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) and watch live WNBA games from the comfort of Toronto. Toronto summers are beautiful. The culture, the diversity is so good. These WNBA players will be greeted warmly and with a ton of love. On top of that, the food is so delicious. Such unique, diverse food. However, just like any other city, the rent prices are outrageously high and it can be expensive to afford. But, I know that the city of Toronto will support this WNBA team and be proud fans and supporters of this team.

I can finally meet so many WNBA fans/media members who cover the WNBA who can come to Toronto to cover a game. It will be nice to finally meet them after so many years of having conversations, first from X (or formerly Twitter) to now Threads and Instagram. I look forward to meeting you all and having conversations about the WNBA in person. This team does not play for 2 more years, but time flies and next thing you know, it is the year 2026.

I’m going to try my best to strive for bigger goals, but I’m keeping quiet on what those may be like as I do not want to be disappointed or upset if I’m not able to reach them. This is my side-hustle. I am not a reporter. I have a day job and I am a freelancer for Her Hoop Stats. I continue to balance both because I love writing about the league and for women’s basketball. I will continue to provide you coverage for the blog and I want to thank my subscribers for sticking with me throughout all of these years. Thank you. It is much appreciated.

I will end this post with these sentiments – Toronto will finally be able to root for a team and it isn’t just Toronto’s team – it is Canada’s team. Just like the Toronto Raptors are.

Much love,

Aneela Khan
