Overseas League Updates April 2nd

French League Round 19 April 1st-2nd

Arena issues meant that one game could not be played in this round, but Saturday started with Kennedy Burke and Villeneuve-d’Ascq winning 72-59 against Roche. The two teams expected to battle to avoid the drop are loading up their rosters as much as legally allowed for those games and Kalis Loyd and Toulouse looked strong in an 81-72 win over Angers. Landerneau also made an addition, but a good game from Briana Day was not enough in a 77-72 loss to Saint-Amand. The big clash was certainly the first game on Sunday and Gabby Williams and Lyon further secured their spot at the top of the standings with a 90-76 win over Yvonne Anderson and Bourges. Landes showed that they are still dangerous with a 79-67 win over Lattes Montpellier.

Spanish Cup March 30th-April 2nd

The Queen’s Cup started on Thursday with two quarterfinals. Valencia opened proceedings with a 69-56 win over Billie Massey and Estudiantes and hosts Zaragoza won their game 71-50 over Araski. Gabija Meskonyte and Gernika surprised Rebekah Gardner and Girona 79-65 in the first quarterfinal on Friday. Avenida took a big lead on Barcelona early then coasted to a 67-55 win. The hosts continued their run with a 74-59 win over Raquel Carrera and Valencia in Saturday’s first semifinal. Avenida built a solid lead on Gernika and then held on to a 59-53 win. A full arena witnessed Sunday’s final and Avenida looked ready to win, but Zaragoza roared back behind the home fans to win 55-51 and send the message that they are not mere outsiders when it comes to the postseason.
