EuroBasket Game 2 June 16th

Group A:

The first game in this group showed how quickly momentum can swing in this tournament as Greece bounced back from a tough loss with Mariella Fasoula and Artemis Spanou leading them to a 73-65 win over Latvia, which was feeling great after their win. Spain found themselves in another dogfight against Montenegro, but Maria Conde helped them control the fourth quarter and win 75-57. With all the teams tied at 1-1, they know that a win means a guarantee at avoiding elimination, but Montenegro and Latvia play first so at the time of the second game Spain will know they advance with a loss if Latvia wins and will top the group with a win if Montenegro wins while Greece would advance if Montenegro wins and top the group with a win if Latvia wins.

Group B:

The first game on Friday was in this group and Belgium still looks like a machine after Emma Meesseman led them to an 84-41 win over the Czech Republic. Cecilia Zandalasini took on the scoring load to help Italy bounce back with an 88-66 win over Israel. Belgium would top the group without need for calculations with a win on the last day, but Italy winning would eliminate Israel before their game with the Czech Republic.

Group C:

France still has not looked convincing as the heavy favorites in this group, but won 63-57 against Temi Fagbenle and Great Britain. Zala Friskovec could not help Slovenia avoid elimination and they lost 66-62 to Germany. Having defeated the other two teams, France will top the group regardless of the result of their last game and advance to the quarterfinals while Germany and Great Britain will play in the next round with their matchup determining bracket placement.

Group D:

The first game at this site was in this group with bracket placement likely on the line when Turkey edged Hungary 69-68. Serbia still sits in the lead after their 90-52 win over Slovakia and no math would be needed for the top spot if they defeat Hungary in the next game. A Hungary win would mean that the Turkey-Slovakia loser would be eliminated.
