EuroBasket Game 3 June 18th

Group A:

The first game of the day was in this group and both teams knew that winning would secure their spot while losing would need them to rely on the results of the other game. Natasha Mack was tremendous for Montenegro, leaving Anete Steinberga and Latvia short 61-58. That set the stage for the second game with Greece knowing that they had advanced, leaving them in third with a loss or allowing them to jump to second with a win. Spain had more extreme outcomes, being eliminated with a loss or topping the group with a win. It was nervy for them for a while before they finally built a comfortable lead in the fourth quarter to win 76-60 wiping out their opening day blemish.

Group B:

Belgium was not quite the unstoppable force that they were in their first two days, but pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 72-64 against Italy behind Julie Vanloo and Emma Meesseman to make sure that they won the group. Israel knew that they would need a big win to avoid elimination, but were hoping to at least get on the board at home with Daniel Raber leading the way, but the Czech Republic won 61-52 to make sure that they did not throw away their fantastic opening game effort.

The first game on the final day in Ljubljana was for second place in the group and Great Britain had the better of the first half, but Germany was stronger after the break and held on to a 62-61 win. Slovenia was hoping to win at home even though they were already eliminated and the result would not affect France’s spot in the standings, but the group winners did buckle down in the second half to win 73-68 and get ready for three days of rest.

Group D:

The first game in this group featured two teams who had advanced and were looking to secure the top spot. Serbia got a key player back and was favored, but Virag Kiss and Hungary surged out of the break and took the lead, flipping the tiebreakers to their favor and then holding on to just enough of a margin to stay in first place 81-75. Serbia knew that they were in second, setting up a scenario with no math involved to close out the group phase with the winner of the last game securing third place and the loser being eliminated. That suited Slovakia, which would have needed a large win to flip the tiebreakers if Hungary had lost and they went to work right away behind Terezia Palenikova, keeping the margin at a safe number for pretty much the entire game on their way to an 80-66 win over Turkey.
