Overseas League Updates October 8th

Hungarian League Round 2 October 3rd-7th

A game from Round 3 was moved forward to Tuesday before this round was played on Saturday and Szekszard defeated PEAC 81-60. Diamond Miller made her overseas debut for Gyor in their 99-75 win over Franka Toth and BEAC. Szigetszentmiklos got a key addition since their opener, but lost to DVTK 74-56 in Miskolc. Jacinta Monroe led Szekszard to an easy 92-40 win over Cegled. Sopron bounced back with a 61-51 win over Vasas. A battle of teams looking to break into the top group saw Matea Tadic lead PEAC past Monika Czinano, Fanni Szabo, and MTK.

Spanish League Round 2 October 6th-8th

The round started with a surprise on Friday as Sedis may have caught Zaragoza coming off a short turnaround from their first EuroLeague game and dominated the final frame to win 84-76, also giving Cameron Swartz her professional debut. Girona made their star signing a player who is not under contract through the end of the season so they will have quite the focus on the two trophies available during the season and defeated Barcelona 76-54 on Saturday. Bembibre got another player into the lineup, but that was not enough late and they lost to Avenida 73-57. Ferrol looked set to win, but Gernika completed a stirring comeback to escape 64-63. The other newcomers Celta did not fare so well even with Robyn Benton making her professional debut, falling to Maria Almendro and Ibaeta 93-55. Estudiantes left Lugo with a 59-44 win over Ensino. The day ended in the Canary Islands with Alba Torrens leading Valencia past Adji Fall and Gran Canaria 77-54. There was only game on Sunday and Arica Carter was brilliant for Jairis in firing them past Marta Hermida and Araski 77-67.

Turkish League Round 5 October 6th-8th

The round started on Friday with Fenerbahce not even filling all of the lineup spots in and rolling after a closer first quarter to a 114-48 win over Alexis Tolefree and Hatay. Saturday’s games were more competitive, including an absolute thriller where Kelsey Bone was completely unstoppable for Antalya, helping them force overtime to win 107-106 as Aaryn Ellenberg-Wiley and Aysegul Gunay had strong games for a Kayseri team that returned to full strength. Overtime was played in Istanbul as well with Joyner Holmes helping Botas leave with a 90-88 win over Myisha Hines-Allen and Galatasaray. The last game of the day was not as close as Cukurova breezed past Trinity Baptiste and Bursa 90-71. On Sunday, Cankaya University was able to shift to their preferred lineup with Shatori Walker-Kimbrough providing extra scoring punch alongside Vionise Pierre-Louis, but the duo of Jovana Nogic and Dana Evans got Besiktas an 88-81 win. Alanna Smith and Sydney Wiese led their team to an 85-64 win over Khaalia Hillsman and Izmit. Damiris Dantas and Orman edged Jessica Thomas and Nesibe Aydin to end the day.

French League Round 3 October 6th-8th

A good matchup of title aspirants started the round on Friday and it was Villeneuve-d’Ascq that pulled away in the second half for an 83-70 win over Alix Duchet and Bourges. Saturday started with Lattes Montpellier’s 83-73 win over Shakayla Thomas and Charnay. Isabelle Yacoubou and Tarbes jumped out of the gates and then coasted to an 82-49 win over Saint-Amand. Alexis Peterson led Landes past Angers 71-58. Ana Suarez and Vaciana Gomis helped Roche finish a massive comeback to defeat Nausia Woolfolk and Landerneau 82-72. Every time Lyon gets a player back, they also seem to lose one so it was the same story for them on Sunday when they could not keep up with Charleville-Mezieres late and lost 66-62.

Polish League Round 1 October 7th-8th

The regular season started on Saturday with Zoe Wadoux leading Zaglebie Sosnowiec past Pruszkow 90-55. Gorzow had to perform major surgery on a roster that had made a brilliant run last season and Elena Tsineke made her professional debut and Chloe Bibby was excellent to help them win 90-82 against a Bydgoszcz side looking to recover from last season’s disaster with new players like Oceana Hamilton and KeKe Calloway. On Sunday, Keishana Washington made her professional debut for Torun, which got good games from La Mama Kapinga Maweja and Angelika Stankiewicz, but the duo of Kayla Wells and Zada Williams ended up being too much and Polonia Warszawa left with an 80-78 win. Chloe Wells had an excellent game for Poznan, but it was not enough in a 77-71 loss to Arka Gdynia.

Italian League Round 2 October 7th-8th

The round started with one game on Saturday that Bologna won 77-53 over Carlotta Zanardi and Brixia. All of the Sunday games were in the traditional timeslot, including Sesto San Giovanni’s 56-47 win over Sassari. A contest between league newcomers saw Battipaglia reach full strength, but the duo of Shaina Pellington and Helmi Tulonen led Sanga Milano to a 70-66 win. San Martino di Lupari defeated Tina Cvijanovic and Faenza 87-75. Martina Fassina and Venezia showed how dangerous they are after a strong second half got them a 78-68 win over Schio even though they are still not at full strength. Oxygen Roma was finally able to play their first game and Giulia Bongiorno was able to make her professional debut in her home country, but Campobasso had the edge in a very close game 66-64.
