Olympic Qualifying Game 1 February 8th

Xi’an

All of the teams involved in qualification started play on Thursday, opening with this group. France has already qualified as hosts so the top two teams besides them will join them. They had a big win in the first game of the day, rolling past Puerto Rico 88-40. New Zealand finally broke through to reach this stage since the adoption of the new format, but their growing list of absences meant a patchwork lineup that was doubled up by Han Xu and hosts China 94-47.

Sopron

The top three teams in this group will qualify and there were many guesses about how it would finish. Spain returned to this stage and paraded out a new naturalized player, but it was Japan that got the 86-75 win behind Saki Hayashi and Evelyn Mawuli. Hungary hosted this group after an unexpected run to get to this point, but lost to Canada 67-55.

Antwerp

The first game in this group was likely to be the most critical and Yacine Diop and Senegal led most of the game in their quest to avenge a final defeat last year, but Amy Okonkwo and Nigeria rallied late for a 72-65 win and the chance to return to the global stage. With the world champions in this group, only the top two teams besides the United States will qualify and hosts Belgium almost got the big win, but Napheesa Collier helped the visitors tie the game and then a buzzer beater gave them an 81-79 win.

The busy day concluded in this group and it is good that the top three teams will qualify with nobody having a clear prediction for how it will finish. Leonie Fiebich and Germany showed that they were ready early, defeating Serbia 73-66. Australia built a lead by halftime, but hosts Brazil surged back and took the lead in the final quarter before the visitors escaped 60-55.
