South American League Group A May 3rd-5th

The continental championship started with half of the field playing their group stage this weekend in Asuncion, Paraguay. The teams will play a three game round-robin to determine which two teams advance to the final phase and the other group will go through the same format next week. Instead of adding these teams to our roster tracker, players who would qualify for inclusion there are listed below.

One of the big stories this year is the return of a representative from Brazil and Araraquara played in the first game, rolling past Ambato Soldiers from Ecuador 83-52. Hosts Felix Perez Cardozo were led by Jailin Cherry in the second game, doing enough in the second half to defeat Fernanda Ovalle and the University of Chile 71-62.

Saturday’s games started with Aline Moura leading Araraquara to a 75-47 win over the University of Chile. That meant that the result of the second game sent them and Felix Perez Cardozo through to the next round even before the games on Sunday after the hosts defeated Ambato Soldiers 74-59.

The first game on Sunday was between eliminated teams looking for a win and it was Ambato Soldiers that prevailed 86-71 over the University of Chile. Both teams in the last game were advancing to the final stage, but still fought to win this group and Jailin Cherry was brilliant for Felix Perez Cardozo, sending the home fans away with a one more victory 80-75 over Araraquara.
