FIBA Europe Competitions Round 1 October 8th-10th

EuroLeague Round 1 October 8th-10th

The regular season started this week as teams will play six games in the group round and the top three teams advance while the last place team will drop into EuroCup.

Group A

This group opened on Wednesday with two teams looking to get an early advantage on a spot in the next round. Landes had the lead in the first half only for DVTK to seize the lead in the second half, but the hosts recovered and just managed to get the 55-54 win. On Thursday, Schio was impressive as Janelle Salaun led them to a 92-58 win over Avenida to close the round.

Group B

The first game of the group stage was in this group on Tuesday and it was expected to be a critical matchup to help determine which team would advance. Brno eventually built a big lead on their way to a 92-61 win over Merritt Hempe and Olympiacos. Cukurova got to showoff their full lineup on Wednesday, but did not run away from Bourges, winning 77-66 with Iliana Rupert leading the way.

Group C

All the teams in this group entered the season with expectations that they would advance. The first game on Tuesday was close and Tanaya Atkinson and Zaragoza fended off Polkowice at home 76-73. There was a rematch of the championship game on Wednesday and Emma Meesseman and Fenerbahce looked as strong as ever, building a lead before halftime on their way to an 81-52 win while Villeneuve-d’Ascq has had to try to rebuild their roster in the offseason.

USK Praha was not at full strength yet for the opener of a tough group on Wednesday, but took the lead early before Valencia recovered and pulled away at the end for an 80-62 win. The other game was on Thursday and Reyer surged in the second half after a halftime tie for an 80-59 win over Gyor.

EuroCup Round 1 October 9th-10th

The regular season started this week with teams scheduled to play six games. The top two teams in each group will advance along with the four best-performing third place teams out of the twelve groups.

Group A

This group started play on Wednesday and Charlotte Velichova and Chomutov completed a fourth quarter comeback for a 90-84 win over Gorzow, which was led by their starting backcourt of Elena Tsineke and Lauren Hansen. Thursday’s game was a chance for AEL to bring the competition to Cyprus, but they had a very tough task facing Lyon, which got to showcase their youngsters, led by Tea Cleante, a name to keep an eye on over the next few years.

This group started play on Wednesday and Crvena zvezda tried to close the gap at the end, but lost to Ibaeta 70-64. Thursday’s game was excellent as Proteas Voulas had the lead early, but were forced into overtime by Sepsi before Anisha George could make sure that they won 77-71.

Thursday’s game was in Lithuania with Lattes Montpellier getting the 74-62 win with Marie-Michelle Milapie leading the way.

This group started on Wednesday with Charnay dominating the second half to defeat Evita Herminjard and Piestanske Cajky 81-53. Thursday’s matchup had a team with history meeting a young upstart and Stephanie Reid and Bodrum took the lead early only to have to fight back and force overtime to win 86-80 over Laura Juskaite and Bodrum.

The plan for this group was for Elitzur Ramla to play their designated home games at the site of their opponent in the same week to minimize travel. They were unable to secure plane travel from Israel to Lithuania and back for the games on Monday and Wednesday so both games were postponed. That left one game in this group that was played on Thursday and Gdynia took the lead early and departed Berlin with a 61-44 win.

Both of the games in this group were on Wednesday and Taylor Soule helped Zaglebie Sosnowiec build a big lead on their way to an 88-55 win over Mechelen. The trio of Debora Carangelo, Sparkle Taylor, and Ana-Marija Begic got Dinamo Sassari past Riga 83-74 despite the best efforts of Mia Loyd.

This group opened play on Wednesday and Campobasso started well at home to get the 72-65 win over PEAC. There was a lot of interest in Yerevan Foxes after their participation was announced to represent Armenia, and they started to publicize big name signings to build the excitement. The roster that they fielded in their first game was not quite at that level and they did hang with Girona for a quarter before Borislava Hristova and company cruised to a 112-57 win.
