2022 Centrobasket November 23rd-27th

Seven teams headed to Chihuahua in Mexico for the Centrobasket tournament. The top two teams in each group qualify for the semifinals and also next year’s AmeriCup alongside the United States, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela.

November 23

The first two games of the tournament were in Group A and the Dominican Republic opened with a 75-39 win over Costa Rica. Arella Guirantes led Puerto Rico again getting to play with her sister in their 100-57 win over Guatemala. The hosts played the first Group B game to close the day and got quite a fight from Hillary Martinez and El Salvador before winning 61-48.

November 24

Games on Thursday started in Group A again and the Dominican Republic had an easy 92-57 win over Guatemala. Arella Guirantes led Puerto Rico to a 86-58 win over Costa Rica to qualify for the semifinals and AmeriCup, pulling the Dominican Republic with them. In the other group, Cuba was the last team to start their tournament and Yamara Amargo and company had the better first frame, but Mexico fought back to win 68-59 and clinch an AmeriCup spot.

November 25

The first game on Friday was between teams in Group A not in championship contention who were playing for a direct spot in the consolation bracket final and Sonia Vasquez led Guatemala past 83-62. The other game in this group closed the day with both teams already advancing, but playing for bracket placement and Arella Guirantes led Puerto Rico again with some help from Isalys Quinones to get past their rivals, the Dominican Republic, 87-68. The game for the last playoff spot and AmeriCup place was the middle game of the day and another good game from Hillary Martinez was not enough for El Salvador and Cuba won 66-48.

November 26

The first game on Saturday was from the consolation bracket and Emily Tevez and El Salvador sent Costa Rica to last place with a 73-57 win. There was no surprise in the first semifinal as Jackie Benitez joined Arella Guirantes in leading Puerto Rico to a 103-66 win over Cuba. The last game of the day was far more competitive, staying close throughout and then needing overtime to settle when Gladys Avila and Mexico just held on to a 97-95 win over Yohanna Morton, Cesarina Capellan and the Dominican Republic.

November 27

Sunday started with the 5th place game and Aida Funes helped El Salvador win 81-69 over Guatemala. The Dominican Republic had the lead early in the race for the bronze medal, but they tough late schedule may have taken its toll with Suanly Tanis and Cuba controlling the rest of the game for a 73-59 win. Arella Guirantes and Puerto Rico left no doubt in the championship game, rolling to an 88-65 win over Paola Beltran and Mexico.
