AfroBasket 2023 Zone 6 Qualifiers February 21st-28th

This zone had their qualifiers scheduled for Bulawayo, Zimbabwe for a spot in the tournament. There were originally going to be five teams, but South Africa withdrew shortly before the event so there was a sudden change in format. Instead of a round-robin followed by the championship, the teams increased the number of games that they would play so that it would be a double round-robin with six games in six days and then one final set of games.

In many respects, the key game of the whole tournament was the first one on Tuesday, which would show which of the two favorites had the edge early. The two old rivals met and Mozambique broke open the game early in the second half to win 74-52 over Angola. Sharon Chamwarura led the hosts to a 69-57 win over Zambia in the other game.

This phase finished on Sunday with the teams in both games knowing that they would also play the same opponents on Tuesday. The two teams playing for the championship knew that the next game would be the one that really mattered, but there were still messages to be sent in this game. Angola went hard for the win having lost the first matchup, leaning heavily on Italee Lucas and Cristina Matiquite, but Mozambique held on to a 74-73 win. Zimbabwe defeated Zambia by more this time after Tadiwa Mabika led them to a 67-47 win.

Tuesday was the final day of games and Mercy Kawagu and Zambia were certainly hoping that they would at least win one game. Sharon Chamwarura and Zimbabwe certainly put that dream out of reach in the fourth quarter and the hosts captured the bronze medal 70-50. Angola knew that only the last game against their rivals mattered for automatic qualification and Italee Lucas was looking to lead them again. Mozambique trailed after three quarters, but Ingvild Mucauro and Odelia Mafanela paced a comeback to get them a 90-82 win and a spot in the tournament.
