Overseas League Updates March 4th

Turkish League Round 19 March 3rd-4th

After four rounds of games were postponed due to the earthquake, league play was able to resume in Turkey on Friday. After the tragic passing of Nilay Aydogan during the disaster, the league is naming this season after her to honor her memory. While many of the teams are located far away from the areas affected, Hatay suffered enough that they notified the league that they would be unable to field a team for the remainder of the season so there are still some decisions that need to be made as games resumed.

Aydogan’s former team Cankaya University played in one of the early games and Tan White led them to a 101-72 win over Rize. Antalya was shorthanded in their 76-49 loss to Megan Walker and company. Bursa was not exactly in great form before, but hit a new low with a 113-51 loss to Sevgi Uzun and Botas. Cukurova wants to continue to hold their edge in the standings and Chelsea Gray and Tiffany Hayes led them past Jessica Thomas and Nesibe Aydin 91-72. The day ended with Teaira McCowan and Azura Stevens forming a powerful combination for Galatasaray in a 92-84 win over Jelena Dubljevic, Jasmine Thomas, and Orman. Fenerbahce is trying to figure out the rotation that they will use for the big games and Satou Sabally and Alperi Onar led them to a 110-56 win over Kayseri on Saturday.

Australian League Round 16 March 1st-5th

The final round started with an important game on Wednesday as Bendigo needed to win to extend their season, but Townsville ended those ambitions and secured the top seed with an 89-64 victory. Perth was looking to build momentum on Thursday and were led by Chloe Bibby and Sami Whitcomb as they held off Adelaide’s final game charge behind Jacinta Monroe, Marena Whittle, and Lauren Mansfield to win 97-93. Sami Whitcomb and Perth continued to warm up for the playoffs on Saturday while Canberra prioritized showcasing Shaneice Swain to end the season and they did that while losing 107-94. Townsville also has plenty of momentum after an 83-61 win over Southside. Not much was at stake in the final game on Sunday, but Tiffany Mitchell did bump up her final average for her scoring title in Melbourne’s 100-60 win over Keely Froling and Sydney.
