The first two games on Saturday were in the consolation bracket, but those teams certainly had a lot on the line with Europe’s last two Olympic qualification places on the line. The first game had both teams giving their all for one of those spots as Germany rallied to force overtime and then needed heroics again to edge the Czech Republic, which had to endure a second straight tough loss, 71-69. Yvonne Anderson and Serbia built up a lead and then held off Natasha Mack and neighbors Montenegro 63-58 in the other game. That set the stage for the championship semifinals and Alba Torrens was at the peak of her powers as Spain took a solid lead in the first half. Hungary cut into the gap in the second half, but still fell short 69-60. Emma Meesseman led Belgium again and they took a lead early in the game that held up even though France had multiple chances late down a possession before losing 67-63.
