Kigali, Rwanda is hosting the twelve teams competing for the championship of Africa with the top two finishers also receiving the continent’s Olympic Qualifying tournament spots. With three teams in each group, each team plays two games in the group stage and all teams advance to the knockout stage and the top team in each group goes straight to the quarterfinals. Three-time defending Nigeria played the first game of the day in Group D and defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo 69-35. Pre-tournament favorites Mali were led by Djeneba N’Diaye in an 80-66 Group C win over Uganda. The hosts had a stronger squad than they could muster for qualifying and it showed in a 64-35 win over Ivory Coast in Group A. A great Group B game closed the day with Cameroon edging Mozambique 55-53.
