The teams that did not win their groups started knockout play on Tuesday to try to advance to Wednesday’s quarterfinals. Cristina Matiquite and Angola took the lead in the second half, but Masseny Kaba and Guinea completed a furious comeback in the final frame to win 71-69. The fourth quarter was also the story in the next game when Senegal blew the game side open then in a 71-60 win over Egypt. Mozambique made sure that they would not be the next second-place team to fall, rolling past Ivory Coast 70-48. Uganda’s strong second half set up their 78-62 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo and guaranteed at least one surprise team will make the semifinals.
